Election 2008: Maine Presidential Election

Maine: Obama Leads McCain by 22%

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 Email to a Friend

Barack Obama has substantially widened his lead over John McCain in Maine since capturing the Democratic presidential nomination from Hillary Clinton.

According to the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Maine voters, Obama now leads his Republican opponent 55% to 33%. In May, Obama enjoyed a 51% to 38% lead, but a month earlier was only ahead by eight points.

Similarly, Obama’s favorability ratings have jumped considerably over the past month. The percentage of voters who view him favorably has risen six points to 63%. He is viewed unfavorably by 34%. McCain’s numbers have remained steady. He is viewed favorably by 51% and unfavorably by 45%.

Maine has cast its four Electoral College votes for the Democratic candidate in the last four presidential elections. In 2004, John Kerry won the state over George W. Bush by nine percentage points. The state is classified as “Likely Democratic” in the Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator.

In the new survey, Obama has a thirty-six percentage point lead over his GOP rival among women voters, but just a seven-point advantage among men.

4. Is she up for reelection? Does ME generally go RED or BLUE?
I can never remember.

11. ME generally goes blue on the Presidential level
They have voted for the Democratic candidate going back to '92. But they are the closest to being a swing state of the New England states, besides NH. Both of their senators are (sort of) "moderate" Repugs, and Collins (the weaker candidate of the two) is up for reelection this year.

16. Maine goes either way, but lately it's been blue presidentially.
Local politics are more complicated than that, but still. It also depends on the region of Maine you're in--southern Maine is usually criticized by the northerners as simply an extension of Massachusetts. But lately we've been blue in the big years, yes.

8. Sue Collins is OK, the R next to her name not withstanding.
I would put her right below Lincoln Chafee on the list of "Republicans who don't make me hurl".

12. If it hurts her as badly as it did Chafee in RI, you're right--she could be in for a bumpy ride.

14. This is sort of surprising, considering McCain's usual popularity in the northeast as a "moderate."
I think most of us Mainers are fed up to pieces with our politics in general--we're being screwed from several different angles, and it's not comfortable. :D

18. Maine can split its electoral votes
I don't think this has happened before, but theoretically Obama could get 3 EVs and McCain could get 1, if McCain wins the popular vote of the second district.
