Huckabee: Demonizing Obama is a ‘fatal mistake’
Posted: 12:00 PM ET

From CNN Political Producer Alexander Marquardt

(CNN) – Former GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee called Barack Obama's candidacy "a landmark achievement" Tuesday, and warned fellow Republicans not to demonize Obama.

"Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonizing Barack Obama," Huckabee told reporters in Tokyo, according to a report by Agence France-Presse.

Huckabee praised the country for getting "to a point where we did not see his color but we truly saw his charisma, his message and what he brought to the campaign trail."

"When people are really hurting — and they are right now — they're not looking at a person's race," he added.

Huckabee said he hopes John McCain beats Obama, but that Republicans should focus on policy differences, not race.

Huckabee suggested questions about whether he might join McCain on the ticket were premature. "You can't accept an invitation to the prom until the football captain asks you. So I'm not going to go out and buy the outfit just yet," said Huckabee, according to AFP.

26. No. He'd just rather they lose on issues, than win on being the racist bastards that they are.
He knows the score.

4. The best thing the Repukes could have done for the Dems.....
....is to nominate John McCain. I sometimes wonder, with the crap he's spounting, if he even wants the Repukes to win. Could it be one of those subconscious self-punishment thing? You know, they know they don't deserve to win, they know they fucked up, they know they suck, they know they have bloody hands, they know they are guilty - so subconsciously they sabotage themselves?????
Sometimes I wonder......

9. Here's another example....
A couple of the reports omitted this comment.......

The former Arkansas governor said that, having grown up in the segregated South, he never thought he would see an African-American win the nomination of a major party for the US presidency.

"I do not want to have anyone misrepresent or miss the opportunity to celebrate what I think is a landmark achievement, not just for Barack Obama, but for the United States of America," he said.

8. Huckabee makes a lot of sense when he's not making jokes about people getting shot
And he's right. The Republicans though will likely not listen to him because attacking Obama is the only route they can go...especially if the state-wide poll numbers stay about the same or keep getting better for Obama.

10. Actually, this is a very
sharp move on the Huckster's part. McCain will not listen to Huckabee, and McCain will be eviscerated in the fall. Huckabee then gets to claim the Republicans got destroyed for two reasons: they lost their "real" conservative "values" by having McCain as the nominee; and they failed to recognize that people were tired of demonizing. In short, the Huckster gets to pass himself off as the Republican's 2012 answer to Obama.

And, I can't believe I am saying this ( someone please send me a link showing that I am getting sucker punched by Huckabee on this), I think the Huckster means it.

16. He does mean it and I believe that he is giving up on politics altogether
and intends to go into talk radio and take on Limbaugh's position as the definitive voice of American conservatives.

He can be himself, be fair minded when he wants to be and make tens of millions of dollars a year.

There is a huge vacum for a conservative evangelical talk show host that has good speaking skills and a sense of humor.

He would have greater impact make more money and in 8 years be better positioned to run for President.

23. If he means it, and I think you are
right in this ( his sincerity),and he does intend to switch to talk radio, I would so much prefer to see someone like him in place of Limbaugh. It could really start to change the political discourse. The eight years as opposed to four is also probably dead on. Thanks.

13. The reality is, Huckabee is actually a decent guy
That long hoped for situation where we can disagree about the ideological chasm between us and still be countrymen? Huckabee, even if his views are fucking wacky, gets that.

Which is why he'll never be president as a Republican.

but you're correct in noting that "fool" was an inference not a direct quote.

of all the Republicans.

I swear, if it weren't for the insane religious beliefs the guy has, I'd be hard-pressed not to vote for him. He's just so damn friendly.

and, sadly, he sounds more supportive of the Democratic Party nominee than the "Democrat" they also hired recently.

27. Color me impressed
It's nice to know that there are still some Republicans with some shred of decency. I wasn't happy about his comments at the NRA convention, particularly when you consider the tragic assassinations of several high profile African-American civil rights leaders in the 1960's MLK being the most prominent one but he DID apologize when he realized that his "joke" maybe wasn't the best thing to say and he did it uncharacteristically quick and sincerely for a Republican.

I think Huckabee is alright. Personally I disagree with him policy wise, but he's a civil guy and has his feet planted on the ground. I can't say the same for McCain.
