You know you want to. Years of pent up frustration unleashed.

It might be kind of fun to throw some of their rhetoric back in their faces.

Imagine this in 2009:

You are with one of your Republican friends/co-workers/acquaintances and after hearing him/her bitch and complain about President Obama, you say something along the lines of:

"If you don't like the way President Obama is running the country, then you are free to leave America"

or

"How dare you smear our commander-in-chief while we have troops in the field!" (We will still have troops in Afghanistan and it will take a year and half to get out of Iraq).

or

"When you smear our commander-in-chief you play right into the hands of Al Qaeda!"

or

"You cannot say you love America, if you do not also stand with our leader."

2. I have lots of fun having those conversations in my head but....
since the only RWers I know are family, I have to toe the line. Not that they have EVER hesitated to spew that garbage when I'm around, though.

3. No; I'll tell them that that's why the country's great; we can agree to disagree
and still get along.

Boring, I know, but

8. No, I have been trying to teach these people for YEARS
there is a difference between patriotism and nationalism, between loving your country and loving your government. We may both love our country, but disagree on the government and how it should be run.

I've spent too long saying this. I'm not going to turn around and go their way now. I might REMIND them of how they acted for eight years. And I HAVE asked them how unpatriotic they were when Clinton was in office (hee, they always get caught off-guard by that). But I'm not playing their nasty game.

12. On a serious note, we must lead by example. But we can REMIND
them that they said those things you mention, in order to emphasize the point that people in the US have the right to free speech and dissent. We can only hope they will take it to heart and act accordingly.

13. NO. I will never pimp patriotism to make cheap political points.....
My friends (and I believe most Americans) are patriotic. Whether they support a president and his/her policies has no impact on their patriotism.

Indeed, to speak out (especially since speaking out against a popular notion or person) against the establishment often draws criticism from others--look at the DU board if you think I'm not accurate. So to take that risk indicates that one loves their country more than they do the approval of their friends, family and acquaintances.

It will be hard. I'm outraged at them. There is a mountain of dead bodies and an empty treasury because of their evil greedy stupidity. But I will try.

17. How about just enough to bring them face to face with their own behavior?
Suppose you threw some context in there and said; "Well, we were all told by you guys that it's 'unpatriotic' to question the President... Are you just a fucking hypocrite?"

I'm just seething to twist these shitheads up with their own words.

16. I will not, for one second, hesitate to say it...
"Well, if I recall, we were all told that criticising the President was unpatriotic."

"Are you saying that's changed because of his skin color?"

Oh, I'd do that, and then I'd twist the exchange until they were red and sputtering.
