A little reality check: Regular folks don't give a hoot about campaign finance reform |
|
When I eavesdrop on conversations people are having about politics, I never, ever, hear them talking about campaign finance reform. They talk about the economy, health care, Iraq, education and energy.
Campaign finance reform is made out to be a bigger issue than it really is because newspaper editorial boards are obsessed with it. And these folks have a lot of power to set the national discourse for the rest of us. Outside of that small arena, however, there are maybe a few others at think tanks and university faculty lounges that care about this issue, but that is about it.

2. Gas. The price of gas, the price of groceries, the lack of wage inflation |
|
THAT is what is on people's minds.
There are three things republicans DO NOT want Americans thinking about:
The fact that we are all working virtually for minimum wage
The price of gas and groceries
The occupation for oil we won't even see in Iraq

I'm focussed mostly at the State level because there is a referendum system for direct legislation... but I truly want to storm the DC Bastille.

4. Actually I think many care, but realize it isn't priority 1. |
|
I think a lot of people would like to see candidates beholden to the people instead of corporations & huge donors but realize we have to bring down some of the corporation's power imbalance first to accomplish that.
Right now it may be like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic or cleaning the house during a tornado, but moving forward there will be a time when it's important to cull those with ties to big money that bind them to certain decisions.

5. I'm not sure I qualify as "regular folks" ... |
|
... but I have to admit that, in my heart of hearts, I don't care either. I'm a political junkie but this is a subject that's always left me cold. I'm sure that's true for a lot of people.
