--- 100 new terrorist targets. Not to mention all that toxic waste. And this McCain lunatic claims he can keep us "safer"? http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSWBT00921120080618---

1. The new threat is atmospheric carbon, not nuclear power and waste. |
|
I won't be surprised if we see Obama support limited expansion of the nuclear component of the US electrical generation mix as an alternative to burning coal.
It's a lesser of two evils kind of thing, and which is more evil is arguable.
I'm more worried about climate change than terrorist attacks on nuclear plants, which I consider a bull shit scare tactic, and waste disposal, which may be a less serious problem than climate change.
Unless, of course, we can convince Americans to use less energy, buy less crap, and give up their SUVs, trucks, and other wasteful vehicles and behaviors.

4. NYC - SKP Makes a good point about newer nuclear techology. |

New poll shows 2/3 of Americans are in favor of it.
the first six nuclear plants will have easier admin for reg's combining state, local and federal inspections, sou construction time will be less hampered by beauracracy.
There is federal regulation in place that indemnifies the first six plants from regulatory imposed delays.
IN THEORY, the regulatory process is now done in one step. The construction and operating license is issued pending construction inspections. This keeps the feds, state and local politicians from having a separate bite at the construction funds and allows the builder to answer an issue once and only once rather than at the federal, state and local level. The regulatory specifications are fixed when the application is requested. This prevents the builder from chasing an evolving goal. The plant designs are now standardized and pre approved.
The existing permit applications are in Texas, Carolina, and Florida.
I’ve heard of build times of four years in recent reports.

If we want to get off of a carbon energy supply, we have to diversify to cover as many bases as possible while we transition. Even so, it will take many years to fully-achieve. Nuclear power is obtainable and the methods have vastly improved over the years. Over a relatively short period of time, nuke power should be implemented until its capactity is replaced by newer techs.
Sucks, but those are our options at this point. We have waited way too long already. Good thing is Yucca mountain is online.
Solar, wind, geothermal, and water power is the way of the future, but we have production bottlenecks right now.
