Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

On the FISA Deal

June 19, 2008

“The proposed FISA deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation. The House and Senate should not be taking up this bill, which effectively guarantees immunity for telecom companies alleged to have participated in the President’s illegal program, and which fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans at home. Allowing courts to review the question of immunity is meaningless when the same legislation essentially requires the court to grant immunity. And under this bill, the government can still sweep up and keep the international communications of innocent Americans in the U.S. with no connection to suspected terrorists, with very few safeguards to protect against abuse of this power. Instead of cutting bad deals on both FISA and funding for the war in Iraq, Democrats should be standing up to the flawed and dangerous policies of this administration.”

Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) is a member of the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence Committees.

Can President Obama come up with a new position?

9. No. Reingold refuses to capitulate to the fascists. It's a simple, clear delineation between the 2.
I guess that does make him more liberal - not much of a feat, these days.

13. Feingold
Feingold is right about FISA. However I don't think Obama will chose him as his VP, because didn't he criticize Obama for not accepting public financing?

He is VERY supportive of Obama , from what I've read. ;)

Hell; they're both Liberals and progressives, right?

That's the kind of team we need in the White House working for US!!!

Thanks, I didn't know of Feingold support for Obama. The only thing I have heard about him regarding Obama was the public money thing. Maybe it isn't as big as a disagreement as I thought. That teaches me to make snap judgments.

That Feingold does support Obama! I think, from what I've read, that there may be
a difference on Universal Health Care implementation BUT those things can be ironed out! ;)

26. I recall when he was leaning towards Obama even when Edwards was running!
As an Edwards supporter at the time, I was concerned about that, since I thought Edwards to be more straight forward about his progressive agenda than Obama was. So there must be more than just a shared set of views on the Democrats agenda. I believe Feingold also trusts Obama more too as a person from the sounds of it! I think that would be a good combination for VP. If Feingold were out of the Senate like Edwards is now, I'd be jumping all over him as FIRST CHOICE for VP! But with him a key leader in our Senate, I think now is the time to say that if there is another VP selection besides Feingold, Feingold WILL be made Senate Majority leader in 2009 to not be kept on the leadership sidelines in 2009.

The Senate Majority Leader position would also be using power effectively.

36. Senators, get a group together and fillibuster this bill. And LAY INTO PELOSI!!!! The traitor.
We need people who will fight. And you can talk all you want but you know that the only way to stop this bill is to give people more time to contact their senator.

So lets see some fillibustering!
