In All Seriousness, Rove's Comments Today Are Very Telling
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 08:28 PM by abernste
The gist of his comments have been discussed ad naseum today on this board:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6402962&mesg_id=6402962

Now before anyone jumps down my throat, I completely agree that 99% of what this guy says should be ignored. He's destroyed his own party and is far and away the most overrated political figure alive.

That being said, he has a history of projecting his own candidate's weakness onto his opponent. Obviously, 2004 is the best example. John Kerry was a war hero, and George Bush a draft dodger. Rove knew that this was Bush's biggest weakness, so he went straight after Kerry's record. 2000 wasn't much different.

I'm not saying that we should ever take Rove's words seriously, but this does show that he thinks that McCain's wealth is a serious weakness. I kind of agree as it undercuts his entire "maverick"/"reformer" ruse. In all honesty, I hope that the Obama camp recognizes this and hits McCain OVER AND OVER AGAIN on his 8 homes, his private jet, etc.

2. Fortunately, the McCain campaign has absolutely no message control.
They can't pull off a Rovian smear as effectively as the Bushies.

3. But I think the OP was suggesting that WE go after McCain's weaknesses --
in this case being he's a country club swell.

4. I agree with you -- we have to think strategically.
I believe this wouldn't be a very palatable subject to the millions upon millions of Americans who are hurting right now.

And even before he married Cindy, his background was pretty affluent and upper-class, too.

Although I firmly believe wealthy people can be just as generous and compassionate and giving as anyone, they really have no clue as to how it is for most of this country. We should capitalize on that.

8. Agreed. McCain can't get elected if every voter in the 1% demographic of
extreme wealth votes for him. OTOH, what's with the country club metaphor. How many blue collar, lower middle class (assuming there's still a middle class vs. working poverty class) people have been members of a country club, let alone visited one?

Now, if Rove had put Obama in a neighborhood bar, "bad-mouthing" the United States, well . . . that's a different scenario that would be more relatable to the voters Rove's going after.

9. well, it is about projection and painting a certain picture
Rove doesn't run a campaign where he says, look here are the problems and these are our solutions to solve them. To him, it's just about winning the election, Fuck all else.
For instance, back in 2000 Bush critisized Gore for not have an energy plan. It's been 8 years and Bush's energy 'plan' has been a total disaster. But that's because they never really laid out nor had a plan about energy. They just did the bidding of thier big oil supporters which is how they view governing. You help those that help you get elected. It's not about doing the right thing for the people or the country. So, Rove's comments tell us what we should come to understand about how they view government. They hate government and they hate Democrats and liberalism for wanting to use government to help people and the country.

10. I'm still scratching my head on this one..
I honestly have no idea where he's coming from on these comments.

On the one hand they want to paint Obama as some sort of radical leftist muslim. Then Rove comes out with this portrait of some sophisticated elitist playboy hanging at the country club, a la Bertie Wooster.

Which is it? Or do they expect the public to buy both?
