Obama now up 9 in Michigan
New PPP poll of Michigan out today. Previous polls had shown the race as tied or very close.

Another swing-state poll suggests that the damage done to Democratic unity by the bitter primary has been exaggerated. The new Michigan numbers from Public Policy Polling (D): Obama 48%, McCain 39%, with a ±4.1% margin of error.

Obama previously trailed McCain in this state according to most pollsters, due in large part to the controversy surrounding the rogue primary keeping him out of the state. However, recent numbers have shown him moving into a lead as he's been able to freely campaign here.

Here's what the pollster has to say about the larger trend at work here: "Every new poll PPP does in a swing state provides more evidence that talk of long term Democratic disunity because of the drawn out contest between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton was over blown."

1. This poll plus the recent Rasmussen poll make me believe Obama really is ahead.
*exhale*

2. Big exhale. Michigan was the one state I was worried Obama would have to play defense.
He can win this even without Ohio (though he should pick up that too if he can), but he needs Michigan. As long as those numbers can hold, this campaign is all about the offense -- on into North Carolina, Virginia, Nevada and Florida!

4. You nailed it.
That's the campaign in a nutshell, although I think Obama will be on offense in many more red/pink states, particularly in the south.

13. Why does everyone on this board say "The South" when they
speak of red states.

The mid-West is far more deep red and, in Obama's case, the South has the African-American constituency that the mid-West DOESN'T have that may aid in pushing Obama closer to victory in one or two Southern states.

The SOUTH is NOT a monolith! And it's not a synonym for racism, either.

14. Easy.
Save for Indiana, most of the Midwest is leaning towards Obama. Some solidly for Obama. So the Mid-West is hardly a "deep red".

Unless you're talking about the Rocky Mountain West. Even then some of it is being turned blue.

19. Why are you putting words in my mouth?
When I talk about the South, what makes you think I am referring to other parts of the country, like the Midwest?

Is it necessary to specifically list the states in order to avoid responses like yours?

5. I don't understand why this is any kind of surprise
Our situation here in Michigan is more desparate than 2004 and we have a better candidate than we had in 2004. My Hannity / Limbaugh ingesting mother and brother admit they don't like Mcsame and I won't be surprised if they end up voting for Obama.

7. It's not a surprise, but this campaign season (at least up till this point)...
Michigan has polled far worse than the other traditionally blue states. Pin it on whatever you want -- the primary voting debacle, "bitter" blue coller voters or whatever the hell else -- but the actual numbers in Michigan have been anemic.

10. I think it is one of the things you listed. The lack of a primary campaign did take a toll here,
but I think all it did was make it take longer for the typical Michigan voter to get to know their candidate. If the recent appearances he made with Edwards and Gore helped his numbers, and it looks like they did, it would support this theory.

By November, it is not going to be a problem.

I believe this state is one of the linchpins of his scenario to win the electoral college. Now he has to win Ohio.

9. Why is there a (D) after the name of the poll?
Does that mean it's a Democratic poll?

27. It means that they work for Democrats in their polling...
it does not mean that the polls are necessarily biased one way or the other. Hell, I've found some GOP polling firms to be remarkably accurate.

11. Good force McSame to announce that he's selected Mittens as his VP.
If there is a choice between FL and MI, he has a better chance with Crist and a lesser chance with MI, uncless he chooses Mittens, which worries me. I think Mittens will galvanize many economic conservatives who don't like or trust McSame on economic policy.

20. Actually, we can afford that.
If Obama takes PA and Ohio, for example, he can still get to 270 with votes to spare. Assuming he takes the NE, West Coast, etc.

There is just a huge number of combinations of states in play that will get Obama to 270.

23. I know, but I just don't want the Talking Heads to delegitimize his win simply
because he didn't win the so-called "battleground" states. And also because of the raw feelings left from the primaries. It would be like pouring salt into the wounds if he lost MI and FL because of those left-over feelings.

25. Mittens proved he doesn't have very much of a following in the primaries.
Economic conservatives always vote Republican too. It's the social conservatives McCain has to worry about.
