but a blogger there says Senator Obama has signed on as a co-sponsor ..... I have found nothing yet to substantiate that claim. Still searching.

43. Makes political sense. |
|
He can and should try to stop telecom immunity if possible... sponsoring something designed to do that has no negatives for the election.
It can also help him when he ultimately votes for the FISA bill even if the amendment fails - because he's going to have to if he doesn't want to campaign against a "vote against american security" now until november. He can attempt to differentiate voting for fisa and opposing telecom immunity.
Too bad the whole bill sucks though. :(

11. Reid could hold the legislation up for the rest of the session if he wanted to |
|
He's the Majority Leader and he controls the calendar. IMO the amendment to get strip telecom immunity won't get 60 votes and they will vote on the damn thing anyway.

30. The majority party doesn't filibuster legislation like this |
|
Party leaders and the White House have been negotiating this bill for months. If they are even bringing it to the floor it means that Reid cut a deal and can deliver enough Democrats to get 60 votes for cloture at the end of the day. He only needs 10 given that the Republicans + Lieberman will all vote for it.
The best hope is that they get 60 votes to strip telecom immunity. But that will probably lead to a veto and the issue will be brought up again closer to November.
If Reid and Pelosi were serious about defeating this, there would be no telecom immunity in the House version of the bill.

42. That's the thinking that made Sen Clinton vote to support Bush's war. |
|
She didn't do the right thing, she voted to look patriotic and win an election. Too many have the attitude that once they get into office they must stay, and therefore they behave to stay in office, to win elections, not to do the right thing.
Always stick to your principles, and if you lose so be it. If you sacrifice your principles to win, then we all lose.

But we aren't going to sit in a puddle of piss in fear and worry about the Republicans ammo with low information voters. The time for fear and risk aversion is over.
They have already convinced the ignorant that Obama is a secret Muslim willing to open the doors for Al Queda to the White House and enslave the white race. Amazingly, Obama is still ahead by 12 points. The politics of fear and division have worn thin.

35. I've been asking myself that question the entire time |
|
When you control Congress the entire idea is to NOT force your party's nominee to vote on issues that will force them to choose to pander to their base or pander to the center.
My guess is that Pelosi got pressured into it by the Blue Dogs and other rank and file who want a vote so they can go home and say they are "tough on national security". But I don't see how they could've exerted that much pressure. The majority of the House Dems opposed the bill.
