Indian group asks Hindu monkey god to lead Obama to election triumph

NEW DELHI — A dozen priests chanted around a sacred fire in New Delhi on Tuesday as a group of Indians offered prayers to the Hindu monkey god Hanuman asking him to grant U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama an election victory in November.

Several dozen people took part in the ceremony held at a Hanuman temple. Many said they believed an Obama victory would bring positive change to the world.

"From the land of (Mahatma) Gandhi we convey our best wishes to Mr. Obama for the forthcoming presidential elections in the United States," said Brij Mohan Bhama, a local businessman who organized the event.

Bhama said an Obama victory would be good for India and the rest of world "because he stands for change" and would help stem rising prices, poverty and terrorism.

2. ...That's rather derogatory...
Hanuman is more than a "monkey god"... Yeesh. That's like calling Jesus "Dead guy on a stick" or YHWH "That god that lives in a tent"

And what's up with this?

"Sauvage-Mar said U.S. federal law prohibits senators from accepting any gifts that cost more than $10."

Really? Maybe Brij Mohan Bhama needs to join a PAC so he can be immune to all those financing laws...

5. Sounds like something I'd offer at my restaurant.
Which wouldn't remain open for long, I don't imagine.

4. I'm sure it's not meant derogatorily; I didn't take it that way...

Hanuman

Hanuman

Hanuman, together with Ganesha and Garuda, is one of the three major Hindu deities with animalistic physical features. He is loved all over India as the monkey-god who so faithfully served Rama, Vishnu's seventh avatar (incarnation), in his war against Ravana, the demon king. Hanuman is a major deity in North India where he is regarded as a propitiator against all evil. Temples to him have been erected all over that part of the country each small villages and towns having their own "Hanuman" shrine to keep the populace within the ambit of his able and benign prowess.

6. Er, thanks, I guess.
Still, it goes to show what kind of an impact just ELECTING him would have on our world image.

8. I said it before, I'll say it again.
Hanuman's one of the great heroes of classical literature. It's an auspicious choice.
