3. I wish
a polling outfit would us breakdowns by Congressional district in that state so we can find out if it's worth making a play for.

4. One of the few states I've seen where the polling shows
McCain leading BIG.

9. Well... in isolation 16 is "big".
Of course Bush won Nebraska by 35 against Kerry.

And by 29 against Gore.

By that measure... a 16 point margin for the Republican candidate in Nebraska sucks. Which says good things about down-ticket prospects even if Obama doesn't carry the state.

12. Particularly when you consider the OTHER factoid of these polls.
In this case, it's that McCain can't seem to break out of the low 50s, even in deep Republican territory. Look at it this way: People aren't yet willing to say that they support Obama, but they also aren't willing to annoint their party's nominee. That means there's wiggle room, and I suspect those undecideds are going to break heavily for Obama. Even if it's not enough to make states like Nebraska competitive, it should at least be ulcer-inducing for the McCain campaign, and force them to spend time and money defending "safe" states.

6. But with NE, we need it broken down by Congressional district.
NE divides its electoral votes.

10. I wonder if Dems were to concentrate on just Omaha and Lincoln
the odds might get a bit better for Obama? Those two towns have the vast majority of the population of the state. I'd like to see a county by county breakdown of blue vs. red support in that state.

21. Maybe the Omaha congressional district
But not Lincoln's district, it is combined with a lot of rural planes, unfortunately.

19. really early for polls.
I don't pay that much attention to polls this far out, but in my statistics class years ago they always said look at the confidence interval. That will tell you a lot about the poll. If John is ahead by 16 points and the C.I. is plus or minus 16 points. Then they are really at a dead heat. Polls this far out usually don't tell the C.I. In which case they are usually designed to pump up one candidate or the other. I can be 98% sure that it will fall between plus or minus 16 points. That is a 32 point spread. Can I be 98% sure that it falls between plus or minus 2 points.
