I'm Going To Send This To Everyone To Fight The Ridiculous Anti-Obama Emails. Please Do The Same!
Edited on Wed Jun-25-08 04:53 PM by ihavenobias
(NOTE: The formatting is much nicer in my actual email compared to how it is below. For one thing I was able to BOLD certain words and sentences to make it easier to read and also, my email is full of hyperlinks which make it easier to read *and* more professional looking. At any rate, unless someone can help me improve the formatting for DU purposes, this will have to do. I encourage to you to send this email to everyone you know, and of course, feel free to add on to areas you feel I may not have addressed thoroughly, or that I may have missed entirely. Also, PM me-Ihavenobias-if you want the the clean, easier to read hyperlink version.)

So I just watched a laughable right wing propaganda video trying to smear Obama: http://www.eyeblast.tv/public/video.aspx?RsrcID=2036.

Here are my thoughts and a bunch of links to videos and articles on these issues. I encourage you to pass this on to undecided and Republican voters. In fact, reply all and share it with the people who send you the Obama scare tactic emails. But before I get to this email, let me share some startling information:

Wage growth for the middle class is twice as high when a Democrat is president compared to a Republican: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/06/13/ST2008061302816.html

Also, 90% of Americans would pay less taxes under Obama's proposed tax plan than under McCain's. If you make less than $112,000 as an individual (this is NOT household income, it's individual), you will pay less taxes under a president Obama than you would under a president McCain: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/11/141710/932/876/534084

Okay, let's address the nonsense issues raised in the smear video...

Obama doesn't wear a flag pin? Question: When did you ever see Hillary Clinton wearing a flag pin? How about John McCain? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vi5nbZvS9cg

Obama doesn't put his hand over his heart for The National Anthem. Wow. Really, this non-story became a story? THIS is what worries people? Not Iraq, not the tanking economy, not gas prices, but where Obama had or didn't have his hand during the National Anthem? That says quite clearly to me that the Republicans know they can't win on the issues (they've had control of the country for 7 years and drove it into the ground) so they need to find and add up as many non-issues as possible and try to scare people. At any rate, click here for the truth about the Obama and the Anthem (and some of the other absurd statements made in the right wing propaganda video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dljboY5t2Dw).

Obama doesn't show up for votes? Guess what the punchline to this one is? McCain has missed A LOT more votes than Obama: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/23/939359.aspx.

Reverend Wright. Apparently now everyone believes every word of what their Reverend, Pastor or Priest says in church…oh wait, except they don't (do you?). Can anyone name a single piece of legislation that Obama has proposed or bring up a policy position that has been negatively influenced in any way by his association with Reverend Wright? No, because it doesn't exist. Tell me, will we get lower gas prices or better health care based on what Reverend Wright said or didn't say(?): http://news.aol.com/newsbloggers/2008/04/30/rev-wright-so-what/

Obama is antisemitic? That's funny, this video suggests that because of "liberation theology" espoused by Reverend Wright, Obama is antisemitic. That's pure and utter BS on it's face. But that brings me to number 5...

What does that make John McCain in light of Reverend Hagee? McCain actively sought out Hagee's endorsement and said he was "proud" of it for months. Hagee said that God sent Hitler as the great hunter to take care of the Jews who didn't go to Israel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct4_ze_FjNo. Hagee also said that poor people should STARVE if they aren't working http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mQvvGJYQaM. And Finally, Hagee also had plenty of terrible things to say about Catholics and the Catholic Church http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/29/john-hagees-mccain-endor_n_89189.html.

So what if McCain didn't go to Hagee's church? McCain ACTIVELY sought out this guy's endorsement and kept insisting for several months that he was proud of it until he was forced to reject it (even though Hagee's sermons got about 3% of the coverage that Wright's did).

Why do we care what Michelle Obama says? Is SHE running for president? Ok, let's assume that you do in fact care for some strange reason. She made the "for the first time in my adult life I'm proud of my country" comments which were pounced on by the right wing and taken grossly out of context. John McCain has said on multiple occasions "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company": http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/19/watch-mccain-didnt-love-a_n_108191.html Does that mean McCain hated America before he went to Vietnam? No, of course not.

By the same token, Michelle obviously didn't hate America prior to her husband running for president. It's laughable to suggest anything different. But again, why do some people seem to think that Michelle and Barack are the same person? Should we harshly question McCain because his wife Cindy was addicted to prescription drugs that she stole from a third world relief organization that she founded http://www.smirkingchimp.com/topics/politics/republicans/cindy_mccain? My honest answer is NO. I would NEVER think to bring up this non-story about Cindy if not for the stupid attacks on Michelle. I just did this to point out how ridiculous it is to be talking about the candidates wives, unless they are directly talking about policy.

As for John McCain, he just might be the biggest flip flopper we've seen run for president in a very long time. He makes John Kerry look rock solid by comparison. The John McCain of 2000 would never consider voting for the John McCain of 2008: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0308/9000.html One of the two worst flip-flops that McCain has had is on torture. He was strongly against it based on his experience in Vietnam. He basically said it was ineffective and un-American and he still claims he's against torture. Except that he recently voted against a bill to stop the US from torturing: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/02/mccain-against.html

The other huge flip-flop from McCain was on tax cuts. He strongly opposed and voted against Bush's tax cuts but now he supports even bigger tax cuts for the rich. And again, 90% of Americans would pay less income taxes under Obama's proposed tax plan than under McCain's: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/11/141710/932/876/534084

In fact, Obama is only raising taxes on people making more than $227,000 individually (that is NOT household income, that is individual income). Notice that McCain's tax plan benefits the top 10%, and especially the top 1% of Americans tremendously. People making over 2.9 million dollars a year individually will get almost a million dollar tax break under McCain's plan.

Finally, while it's true that no one can take away John McCain's heroism and great service to our country in Vietnam, it IS true that he has made some incredibly questionable personal decisions in his past (I only bring this up because apparently values voters seem to care). For example, the fact that he left his first wife (after she raised his kids while he was away and after she was in a severe car accident) for a beautiful, wealthy woman almost 2 decades younger than him: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/06/10/meet-john-mccains-wife-no-not-that-one/

And of course who can forget the time that McCain said the following to his current wife Cindy in front of several people "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c#nt": http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/07/report-mccains-profane-ti_n_95429.html

PS----Here is a short youtube video on McCain that has more than 2.5 million views, and for good reason (and look, it doesn't focus on personal attacks and guilt by association like the laughably bad Obama video did): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c&eurl

By the way, if anyone is watching Fox News for "Fair and Balanced" information, I would point out of the fact that the last three people hired by Fox are:

Karl Rove, Mike Huckabee and conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham. Really, is that "fair and balanced"(?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouKJixL--ms

But come on, you're telling me that Obama is supposed to be a radical liberation theologist because one of his hundreds of campaign offices happens to have one poster of a 'radical liberal'? Or do we go back to questioning Obama's former church, even though we seem to ignore the religious figures that were involved with all of the other candidates(?): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cenk-uygur/different-standards-for-b_b_92337.html?page=2 By the way, if Obama is a crazy radical Christian (or Muslim, and by the way, he can't be both although obviously he's neither radical nor Muslim) why is the conservative Evangelical biographer of George W. Bush and Tom DeLay writing a rather positive book about him(?): http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0608/11099.html

I mean come on, is that the best these guys have? Why doesn't this video talk about REAL issues, like who's going to do something about housing and gas prices? Who's going to keep us in Iraq for another 100 years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFknKVjuyNk while adding trillions of dollars to the National Debt(?): http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/07/AR2008030702846_pf.html

Keep in mind that just 3 Republican presidents are responsible for over 70% of our national debt.

How about medical insurance? Speaking of medical insurance, it's funny when someone says that Democrats are for "socialized health care" or "socialized medicine". Ignore the fact that our military is socialized (aka, tax payer funded and run by the government), as are the police and fire departments we depend upon and trust to keep us safe.

When people refer to single payer health care, that just means that the government makes the insurance payments to the PRIVATE hospitals. It does NOT mean that the government runs the hospitals and hires and fires the doctors. IF the government hired and fired the hospital staff, THAT would be socialized health care, and no one, including Obama, is pushing for that on the campaign trail.

The bottom line is that the right wing is resorting to smear emails and character assassination because they have no record to run on and the country is more than ready to kick the bums out of power and give someone else a chance.

This is as good as it gets for John: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cenk-uygur/as-good-as-it-gets-for-mc_b_106898.html

Once people find out about The Real McCain, it's all downhill from there... http://therealmccain.com/

54. Because it's not just about the original sender of the smear...
it's about all of the downstream people that end up receiving it. And many of those people are low-info voters who can be swayed.

There are plenty of low-info voters, moderates, independents, etc. who are influenced by this junk.

I received a similar smear email the other day, called "Not Exactly." When I responded with the debunking from Snopes.com (http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/50lies.asp), the sender was apologetic and told me she forwarded the Snopes link to everyone she sent the original email to.

I just copied ihavenobias' post to my desktop to use if/when I receive the offending link by a low-info voter.

I would not, however, just send the info to everyone on my email list. This just legitimizes the original slander. Example -- "Obama fathered an illegitimate child. Here is the proof he did not." Of course, one can never prove a negative, so the original accusation lives on in the mind of the voter. So I'll just keep this smear response in my quiver, to use when needed.

there is a video out there (from another speech) where Michelle does leave out the word "really". ( http://embeds.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/02/19/michelle-obama-is-proud-of-her-country/ )

However, the thing that bugs me about it all, is that McCain can says numerous times that he didn't love America before becoming a POW, and gets virtually no flack for it from the media.

Yet, when Michelle talks about being not being proud of her country before, she catches all hell for it. But that doesn't mean that she didn't love her country. She just wasn't proud of it. As an example, when my son was younger, he used to get into a lot of trouble in school. I wasn't proud of him, yet I still loved him. Finally, when he straightened himself out, I can now say that I am really proud of him.

As for being proud of America, there are an awful lots of horrible things that this country ("country" meaning the government, not the people) has done over the years that I sure as hell am not proud of.

That's because McCain ain't BLACK OOOoooooo...be afraid! His name is Hussein!
(Hussein is like John....a most common name.) And he's just a Jr. Senator! Nothing like the all important job of Gov. of TX! And his preacher said something we don't like! And we all know everyone thinks just like their preacher does.

What a bunch of pitiful talking points. Is this all they've got? Fear...again? Remember they ran on fear the last time and lost....had to steal the election. If enough Dems vote to overwhelm the fix, then we can win. So VOTE!

43. I've never *directly* been sent an Obama smear email but friends will forward them to me
Sometimes they received one, or someone they know did and it's kind of a "hey, look at this fear mongering garbage email my sister got from a co-worker".

That's actually where the video that inspired this thread came from. My co-worker's sister had the video forwarded to her from a supposedly (moderate) co-worker who was having serious doubts about Obama after watching it. She claims he really is moderate and that he wasn't faking it.

Wow, talk about low-information voter. Then again a lot of "moderates" are low-information voters. I know, I know, it depends on how you define moderate, but come on, in light of the last 7 years I don't really see how anyone can have a "moderate" opinion of the Bush administration with the lies, miserably failed Republican policies, fear mongering and the list goes on and on.

That's also why I made the first two links about devastating facts regarding Democratic presidents and income growth and the fact that 90% of Americans would pay less under Obama's proposed tax plan compared to McCain's.

Honestly, even if you just emailed those two links to everyone you know, it would be worth it. I can't think of anything more damaging to the Republican party and John McCain.

38. but, but, but....
Barack HUSSEIN Obama is black! I wish there were a good way to address that, but there are going to be a lot of ignorant lower and working class white voters who will never vote for him for that reason alone. (and I am white working class, so I think I can safely call them out for it) But great post, definitely bookmark material, since some of the ignorant people who have my e-mail address have already sent me some seriously obnoxious BS chain letters. Sadly, they will probably just hit the delete key rather than read it (just like I did with their e-mails).

There are SO MANY people who ONLY vote based on who will make them pay less taxes. If most Americans heard about the 90% fact and the fact that people making under 112k (Individual income, NOT household income) will pay less taxes under Obama compared to McCain, it'd be a LANDSLIDE.

48. Rec'd!
One suggestion for DU'ers: can we not refer to a certain crowd as "values voters"? It is most certainly not a sense of values, nor patriotism, nor civic duty, nor national pride that drives that group to the polls. Rather, the only thing that inspires the so-called "values" voters to swarm to the polls is the demonic glee of taking something they don't appreciate away from someone else who needs it. (For example: marriage.) I'd rather call them "wedge-issue voters" than to dignify them with a Rovian, glossy label to cover their self-servative agenda. Thanks!!

51. Honestly, if you think someone is going to tune out a long email
Just send them three quick facts (all of which I provided in my original post):

1)-The info/link regarding middle class wage growth under Dem Vs Repub presidents

2)-The info/link regarding income taxes under Obama Vs McCain

3)-The fact that over 70% of our national debt is from just 3 Republican presidents.

I realize that those three things don't really address the Obama smears, but look, the fact is that tens of millions of people out there vote primarily for who they think will allow them to make and keep more money. In this election cycle especially, there are even MORE disenchanted, cynical voters who think they'll vote Republican ONLY because they assume they'll pay lower taxes. I'm sure you personally know at least a handful of these types, directly or indirectly through work, etc.

Once these people find out that only 10% of Americans will pay less taxes under McCain than they would Obama, it's over. I keep hammering this point because I truly believe it's devastating. It's MORE devastating IMO to the average low info voter than ANYTHING else you could possibly think of saying. You won't convince super pro-lifers or die-hard Republicans, but so what, you were never going to anyway.

They might have their doubts about bullshit guilt by association and innuendo regarding Wright, Ayers and whatever else, but ultimately their doubts about the tanking economy, keeping their job and insane gas prices will prevail.

49. Bookmarked, recommended and a request--
I am getting inundated with emails riddled with anti-Obama propaganda from one or two different sources. Every time I sit down to write a response, I get so filled with anger (the last one I received quoted Michelle Malkin which really made me crazy!). If anyone has a nicely written, calmly explained response that you've used to knock some sense into these asshole's heads or at least give them something to think about (although one wonders if people who send this type of hate mail propaganda are actually capable of intelligent thought), would you please send it to me via PM or respond here? Maybe some bullet points they have used previously? I had one that I'd started pre-primary but it's a bit dated now and could use some fresh ideas- very simply put.

I can cut and paste from the one here (which is great) but could use a few more just to get started on how to address these folks once and for all.

Thanks much!

53. Will he fillibuster the new FISA bill, or vote to destroy the fourth amendment?
The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides that:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

57. 'Socialized medicine' - I like to point out to
Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 11:15 AM by xxqqqzme
publicans that in addition to military, fire & police - YOUR tax dollars provide 'socialized medicine for their elected representatives (here in CA that is both state & federal) as well as state & federal government employees. Don't see any of those reps or gov employees refusing the benefit. It is usually the one thing someone will mention about working for a state or federal government - good benefits.

BTW, I've already received most the hatemails you address.....from my mother! I usually don't even bother responding because she's a RW koolaid guzzler (she thought the 'purple heart' band aids were funny!?!). If I do respond it is usually w/ the tried & true snopes link. You have given me extra info I will use when the next uninvited but inevitable hatemail hits my inbox.

77. No
My answer is still that I'm annoyed by thread hi-jackers. FISA is plenty damn important and I created several threads on it, which is the reasonable, respectful thing to do. You know, that's in contrast to trying to hijack a completely and totally unrelated thread to promote a political point.

My second answer is this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x149843

68. Outstanding post!
What really gets my goat is that all this information is OUT THERE. It is pure laziness on the part of the right to not inform themselves. I am sending this along to every right winger I know, including one more question about whether or not they support amnesty for Japanese and German war criminals that WE TRIED for the same things.

The hope we have here is that the majority of the authoritarian personalities CAN be shown the truth. We just have to figure out a way to get past all the lies out there deliberately keeping people from some very simple truths.
