Wes Clark is auditioning for VP! I knew it!
Edited on Wed Jun-25-08 09:28 PM by senseandsensibility
He appeared on Dan Abram's show tonight, and was attacking McSame. He just kept turning all of Dan's inane questions back on McSame and how bad his judgment is. He was an attack dog, and we all know that that is a major role for all VP candidates,(or should be).

In recent elections, however, we have had "nice guys" as the VP nominee, and it hasn't worked out so well. So I am encouraged that at least Clark understands this, and is showing that he does. And, of course, he has the foreign policy creds to do so.

All in all, I was very pleased with his performance, and what it indicated to me: he's interested!:patriot:

7. K & R - I'm hoping Obama chooses Wesley Clark as his VP running mate...
Edited on Wed Jun-25-08 10:32 PM by GreenTea
Why, because Clark is articulate, ex military general (will help off-set McCain's "only asset") Clark is knowledgeable, a great in-the-republicans-face-speaker, as well vibrant & handsome, his qualifications would be a huge asset and the best candidate for Obama's chances.

As we've seen with all the power Cheney has shown that a VP now has, it's very important to have a guy like Wesley Clark as our Democratic VP!

29. Maybe. He would certainly put it back in play for Democrats
That would force McCain to fight hard there to still hope to win it. I think Obama/Clark would win Arkansas. It's a small State that does elect Democrats and they will be proud to have one of their own on the national ticket again.

30. Was Clark for or against the war? Thats a big question in my opinion
Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 10:53 AM by BrentTaylor
This worries me.

On the question of Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction, Clark seemed remarkably confident of their existence. Clark told CNN's Miles O'Brien that Saddam Hussein "does have weapons of mass destruction." When O'Brien asked, "And you could say that categorically?" Clark was resolute: "Absolutely" (1/18/03). When CNN's Zahn (4/2/03) asked if he had any doubts about finding the weapons, Clark responded: "I think they will be found. There's so much intelligence on this."

31. I've heard that he was against the war before the invasion also
The quote in your post is somewhat troubling to me, but perhaps he changed his mind shortly thereafter? I did see a great clip posted by a DUer showing Clark talking VERY aggressively against the war in late 2003, so he has been against it for a long, long time now. I have also heard others claim that he was always against it, so maybe other DUers could chime in here.

39. Apples and Oranges
Scott Ritter, who no one doubts was against the war, also believed that something might have been missed when the UN inspection team was pulled out in 1998. He said that 5% of the weapons remained unaccounted for. Wes Clark was against the invasion, but as he once said, "It's a tough neighborhood." He doubted that Saddam didn't have something set aside. Believing that Saddam was contained, Clark did not support a war.

From Gene Lyons' Buzzflash interview about Wes Clark. Note the date he refers to...July 4th 2002:

Going all the way back to the summer of 2002, I got a sense of how strong his feelings about Iraq were. Long before it was clear that the administration was really going to sell a war on Iraq, when it was just a kind of a Republican talking point, early in the summer of 2002, Wesley Clark was very strongly opposed to it. He thought it was definitely the wrong move. He conveyed that we'd be opening a Pandora's box that we might never get closed again. And he expressed that feeling to me, in a sort of quasi-public way. It was a Fourth of July party and a lot of journalists were there, and there were people listening to a small group of us talk. There wasn't an audience, there were just several people around. There was no criticism I could make that he didn't sort of see me and raise me in poker terms. Probably because he knew a lot more about it than I did. And his experience is vast, and his concerns were deep.

From that same interview and sorta on topic, Lyons talks about Clark's ability to kick butt:

Clark's intellectual brilliance may be more apparent than Clinton's, because Clark doesn't do the "aw-shucks Southern country boy" act the way Clinton can do it. So you're struck immediately with how intelligent he is. At the same time, he listens to people and pays attention to what they're saying, and responds like a human being.

I want to be careful how I say this, but he has an almost feline presence -- and by that I don't mean "catty," as in bitchy. I mean like a big cat. I once encountered a mountain lion in the Point Reyes National Seashore in California, on a rainy day in winter, when I was all by myself. We stood stock still staring at each other for a few seconds. And there was this moment of "Gee, that's a cougar, this is really cool." And then an instant later, came the feeling of "My God, that's a lion!" There's nothing between me and him, no fence. Clark has a little bit of that kind of presence. You sense a tremendous personal authority about him held in and contained by self-discipline. Not somebody to fuck with, is another way of putting it.

43. The Singularly Most Fearless Campaigner In The Democratic Party
Indefatigable

The Energizer Bunny of the Campaign Circuit.

He has campaigned **hard** for more downticket Dems than any of us can name. He also campaigned **hard** for himself and then for Kerry. He did the same for his primary choice (the only thing he's ever done that I think was waaaaaaay stupid), but changed course in a heartbeat and has been onboard for Obama since a few days **before* Clinton bagged it.

I dunno about his actual veep chances, although he is sure as shit **my** number one choice for the job. To be honest, he's my number one choice for Pres, but that's not for here and not for now.
