No one wins with just the base. |
|
It would be a perfect world, if we could get someone elected with just the base, the purity of our ideals shining in the sun.
There is only one problem with that scenario. It does not work. There will always be a certain amount of compromise in order to move forward.
In fact, was that not what ended up bringing down the right wing. They tried to work just out of their base.
I understand those who point out the flaws, but reality is that there will always be a certain amount of compromise.
The only ones who want the "second coming" in a canidate, are those who do not support a candidate in the first place.
Nothing like holding a person to an impossible standard to make sure they do not win.

4. Sometimes things are not what they seem.. |
|
One of the biggest problems we have had with bush, is his trying to over trump the courts..
"Obama came down on the side of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who argued that a provision in the new law reaffirmed that FISA, and that act's courts, gives the final say over government spying. President Bush has argued that a war-time chief executive has powers that trump FISA.
"It restores FISA and existing criminal wiretap statutes as the exclusive means to conduct surveillance -- making it clear that the President cannot circumvent the law," Obama said today."
Obama is a pragmatic POLITICIAN..who gets things done.. and the first thing to get done.. is get it away from the neo cons, and keep it out of the hands of a single entity such as the presidency.
Everything takes steps,.. especially when we have been drug down as far as we have in the last 7 years.. it will not get turned back in a heartbeat and one fell swoop stroke

6. It allows the telecoms to get away with illegally spying on innocent Americans |
|
Obama flip flopped on this, and now he has come down on the side of the illegal activity of the corporations, rather than on the side of innocent Americans.
SURPRISE!

a single government agency spying on us.. I mean we have given up a tremendous amount of freedom in the last 7 years.. and it is because of fear.. I see Obama, moving us back from the precipice..

You win the prize as "most incomprehensible op" of the day.
What exactly is it you are trying to say?

8. But can you win by trashing the base and abandoning their concerns? |
|
The pukes are successful in part because they placate their base, at least a little, during the campaign. It's obvious from this supposedly "liberal/progressive" forum that most Dems, even here, are willing to compromise any principle for the chance of victory. They may rationalize it by thinking that, once in office, Obama will magically turn into a fighting liberal. Every action and word by his campaign clearly says the opposite. He is running to the right and will govern from that corporate-based side. Ralphie may not be totally correct, but he is more right than we would like to admit.
