tend to promote the "look" of a very thin woman because "clothes hang better." on them. A good friend of mine was a model for Ford (elite agency) for years.

That's a big part of it.

The same is true of men. Thinner (often referred to as 'euro-weenie') men are preferred as fashion models because "clothes hang better" on them. See, for example, A&F catalogs.

As a strength athlete myself, I am well aware of this bias. Muscular men do fine as action stars in movies, but cannot be fashion models. And Hollywood's idea of "ideal muscularity" in your brad pitt's etc. is what most strength athletes would consider scrawny.

But fashion mags are there to sell clothes. And clothes "hang better" on thin people.
