McCain endorses California anti gay marriage state constitutional ammendment

McCain seeks to reassure conservatives in Ohio
Participants in the private meeting say he promised to consider an anti-abortion running mate and to talk more openly about his opposition to gay marriage.

Many conservatives have been upset that McCain opposed a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, a position he said he took because he believes states should decide the issue. At the meeting, McCain sought to reassure conservatives by emphasizing his work on behalf of an anti-gay-marriage measure in his home state.

He referred to that in his endorsement of the California initiative, lauding efforts to "recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman, just as we did in my home state of Arizona. I do not believe judges should be making these decisions."

Oh Senator McCain keep your fucking hands off of our constitution
and send us your gays - we will be happy to honor them with the legal wedding they deserve.

We will jam up your courts for decades.

3. I hope Bush and McCain both endorse the amendment
I can't think of anything more likely to guarantee it's failure.

7. I guess he's not planning on getting more than 40% of the under 18-30 yr old vote
People under 35 are fed up with this gay-bashing politics and demagoguery. As more older Americans, er, um, leave us, the political tide will slowly, but certainly shift on this issue.

9. it says a lot that he was pressured to do this
it is no longer an effective wedge issue for republicans.

12. And this is why I'd never vote for him
As much as I dislike single-issue voting, not that I need a single issue not to vote for McCain, this qualifies.

I have somewhat of the same problem with Obama, but he at least wouldn't stand in the way of gay marriage, even if he doesn't approve of it...

15. Excellent.
The only thing better would be if Bush endorsed it too.
