Texas! McCain 43 - Obama 38
Poll shows McCain with narrow lead over Obama in Texas

12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 27, 2008

By WAYNE SLATER / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Republican John McCain has only a slight lead over Democrat Barack Obama in reliably red Texas, according to a new poll.

The survey of likely voters also found Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Democratic challenger Rick Noriega in a statistical tie, with a quarter of the electorate yet to pick a candidate.

Democrats touted the poll as evidence of a partisan realignment that portends well for the party in November. But Republicans dismissed the survey, saying it oversamples Democrats in a state where the GOP has dominated politics for a decade.

The poll, conducted for the Texas Lyceum, a nonpartisan leadership group, found that Mr. McCain leads Mr. Obama 43 percent to 38 percent.

Pollster Daron Shaw said the results reflect heightened enthusiasm among Democrats with Mr. Obama's historic candidacy topping the ticket and Republicans more divided than in recent years.

1. Yep
Over 60% of the voters that turned out for the primaries were Democrats.

Congratulations, GWB. You woke the sleeping giant.

2. If they took the poll at my brother in law's bar in Arlington,
It would be Obama 90, McCain 2, and Willie Nelson 8.

3. Thank BoB Willie didn't pull a Kinky
The Red-Headed stranger would be hard to beat.

If fact, Obama's kind of like Willie. Despite his politics, rednecks and slickers love him.

5. Tanstaafl
It's in the southwest side of Arlington, on Bowen just off Division (think I have the names right). Jim and Mary Ann are the ones who started the darts leagues. They've been around for over 25 years--like their tie-dye giveaway commemorative tee shirts said, "What a long strange trip it's been." If Mary Ann is behind the bar, tell her Ayesha says hi.

6. 162,000 people moved to Dallas Fort-Worth last year, Texas has added over a MILLION left coasters in
...the last 2 years because you could sell your LA home and buy one in DFW cash and work here were the average income is around the same as Los Angeles.

I honestly believe Texas could be in play this year if the DNC puts some work into it

7. The best part is that TX has more electoral votes than FL.
Which means that we wouldn't have to kiss FL's ass anymore.

8. Yeap, Texas is STILL growing yearly. My Neighborhood is 80% California, they tell their families and
...and people love the DFW due to diverse economy and it being warm.

Hopefully the DNC takes these number into account and can see what's happening in the state.

A Richardson VP pick DEFINANTLY means Obama wins Texas.

9. I'm concerned that they oversampled Hispanics in that poll
They made up 20% of the Texas electorate in 2004. Surely, that number will be higher this year. But 32%? That's seems like a reach. In Texas, many Hispanics are not yet US citizens (voters) and pollsters need to be careful about that.
