MANCHESTER – Michelle Obama yesterday set the table for today's Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton "unity" rally in Unity by praising his former rival as a ground-breaking leader on issues that matter to women and working families.

Campaigning with Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, the would-be first lady told a women's forum at the Center of New Hampshire Radisson Hotel that her husband will be a champion for issues important to women. She quickly stressed that the nation is closer than ever to ensuring equal pay for women, expanded sick time and paid family leave "because of an extraordinary woman who's not in this room, but she's traveling with my husband tomorrow, and that woman is Hillary Clinton.

"Because of Hillary Clinton's work, the issues of importance to women who work and the working family are front and center in this election," Obama said. "We are so incredibly proud and pleased to have her support."

The Obama-Clinton unity tour kickoff is expected to attract several thousand people and nationwide news attention.

It is the focal point of a national effort by the Obama campaign to build his support among older, working-class women who had been attracted to Clinton and who Republican John McCain has been working recently to attract.

Shaheen, who served three terms as governor, is the most high-profile woman politician in the state and presumably can help Obama with the women's vote in New Hampshire.

"Over the past seven years," Shaheen told an audience of about 300, mostly women, "people have felt that this country hasn't been fair. That the country has been tilted against the middle class and in favor of corporate interests and the rich and the powerful."

She said that with Obama in the White House and Democrats in Congress, "We can make this country work again for middle-class Americans."

They always use the photos with them making the most awkward expressions. I don't think its by accident.
