McCain addresses a Jewish group by phone for about 20 minutes– without knowing the line had cut off

Bedeviled by a bad cellphone connection, John McCain gives a conference call speech to dead air. But he gets a do-over.

Although John McCain was stumping in Ohio on Friday, his campaign arranged for him to talk by phone to leaders of B'nai B'rith International, a major Jewish group, who were meeting in Ottawa. Reporters were invited to dial in to the conference call at 3 p.m. to listen.

McCain soon came on the line and launched into his spiel. "Thank you for all the good you do," he began.

Then silence.

"We lost the senator," a voice conceded after a minute or so. "We lost the candidate. . . . Can we get a message to someone?"

More minutes passed.

Finally, the voice announced that McCain was on the road and had lost his cellphone signal. "We'll just have to wait," the voice counseled.

Someone hummed a ditty into the phone. More minutes passed. Finally, at 3:18, McCain came back on the line.

"Where did you lose me?" he asked.

"We lost you at the very beginning," he was told. "You gave your whole speech and you didn't know you weren't connected to us."

"I'm so sorry," McCain replied. "I'm very sorry. I'll do it again."

And he did.

6. here's a good story...

in port one time a group of guys were talking and one guy, a wheelsman named george, was telling us how he'd called home the night before and talked for an hour to his wife, but the call ended badly when he noticed she was snoring! She fell asleep listening to him drone on.... what was remarkable about the story was how george, on detecting her snores, had to yell and bang the phone for five minutes to wake her up, and boy was he mad! At her, for drifting off! Everybody at the table looked at each other, amazed mainly that anyone would recount such a story that...well said they were boring etc, but george hadn't thought of that. His wife, when he got home, he said, was sure in for a talking to.....

John McCain's time has come and gone, that time being the early Dark Ages, and he just doesn't strike a convincing profile of a contemporary citizen.

I think he's in for a very rough few months this summer and fall and a very disappointing evening come November.
