1. What's that man doing? Is that a terrorist thumb jab?
FAUX should investigate. Or at least they should just report it as a terrorist thumb jab.

He's not even holding a fruity, umbrella-topped beverage. This is so transparent.

29. I'd love to tell you about it:
I was there a couple times when I was a kid/teen, '78 and maybe '81 or something (?). We stayed at Kiahuna Plantation at Poipu Beach, then, but that was before that area had been so built up. It wasn't so ritzy/shopping-destination-ish. (The entire island only had one stoplight at that point.) I recall playing in the giant waves, finding huge shells, and throwing the frisbee with my sister on that sweeping lawn. Oh, we also went on the Fern Grotto river trip, and that was well before it was mostly destroyed by hurricanes. I returned to Kauai in 2006 and 2007 (I'd been to Maui and Oahu on various trips, between the Kauai trips). Wow. Seeing Kauai through adult eyes was amazing. The sight of those green cliffs when you're coming into Lihue ... Pure paradise ... We stayed at a fabulous place called Waimea Plantation Cottages. They renovated several houses (circa 1900 - the early 30s or so) that the sugarcane workers on the plantation had lived in. Talk about feeling like you're in "old" Hawaii. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, too. *sigh* I wish I could just transport myself there right now... And that Napali coast has got to be the most spectacular scenery I've seen anywhere. :loveya:

23. ROFL - Keep Forgetting That Obama Is a Brah!
All we need is a picture of Obama throwing a hang loose sign on the beach searching for some tasty waves. I keep forgetting that he went to Punahou.

31. Punahou? Brah?
Maybe things have changed in the last 50 years (why would that surprise me :-), but at the time I attended James B. Castle Middle and High School in Kaneohe wasn't nobody going to confuse the folks who when to Punahou with the rest of us. I went over there for a school event once and was asked how they managed security at Castle so that we were allowed out of the reformatory to attend. The kids who went to Punahou (and Mid-Pac) were a pretty definite elite, at least in their minds.

Obama's attendance at Punahou worries me way more than statements about NAFTA or FISA!

32. Kind of Stereotypical There
I know a couple of folks who went to Punahou, and they were pretty down to earth, walked around college in flip flops and T-shirts, and did not look like, nor were they thought of as elite. I will assure you that no parted to make way for the Punahou graduates at college. Your comments strike me like a UNC alumni ripping on a Duke alumni or a UCLA alumni ripping on a USC alumni. Finally, Obama was being raised by a single mom, then by his grandparents, in a state where only 2% of the population is African American.

So, I doubt that Obama was leading a cushy life. He was not impoverished, but I think it is shameful to suggest that his Obama or his grandparents received some sort of free ride:

* * *

"Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, Obama's maternal grandparents, came of age here during the Great Depression. As a young man, his grandfather "found odd jobs on small farms and oil rigs, always dodging the bank failures and foreclosures that were sweeping the nation at the time," Obama said Tuesday.

They married in the early days of World War II. Stanley enlisted in the Army shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed, and he served under Gen. George S. Patton. Obama's mother was born on the Army base Ft. Leavenworth, and Madelyn worked on a bomber assembly line.

Obama, who was born in Hawaii, made his first pilgrimage to El Dorado some 60 years later, he said, living proof that his grandparents' dream was realized -- go to school on the GI Bill, buy a house through the Federal Housing Authority, send their daughter off to college. The Dunhams helped raise Obama after his mother's marriage broke up when he was 2.

"They were able to ride that upward mobility and help me get an education," he said on the plane from Washington. And he came here this day to highlight the small-town virtues of hard work and opportunity, the "ones that we need to rediscover."

* * *

Though, perhaps it is valid to write-off Duke Alumni as elite and pampered. ;)

33. Spend much time in Hawaii in the 50's?
My comment was made from the perspective of a kid who went to Hawaii public schools in the 50's. Punahou and Mid-Pac were where the kids from the families that ran the islands went to school. Public school funding and curricula were focused on Hawaiian kids who would end up working in agriculture or on the water; private education was where kids went if they were going anyplace after high school.

I know Barack Obama's family history, and maybe Punahou is different now. In the context of my time growing up in Hawaii it meant something. Believe me, as a mainland haole kid I learned a lot at Castle that I wouldn't have at Punahou. Probably not lessons Barack Obama needed to learn since it was mostly about how to survive as the lone, non-military haole kid in the school. Those are skills and perspectives that shaped my world view and politics every since.
