I'm going to Concentrate on Slamming McCain, since so many DUers are so busy Slamming Obama!
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 05:35 PM by FrenchieCat
It appears that John McCain is now publicly taking credit for a bill that he not only DID NOT Vote for, but that he actively campaigned against; the GI Bill.

A couple of the liberal Blogs have noted McCain's convenient lingo, but not enough of them.

We have an entire weekend to bring this Flip Flop of military magnitude to the attention of the more mainstream media.

The next important news cycle begins Monday.

McCain Flip Flops Again -- Praises GI Bill He Opposed

In today's installment of McCain vs. McCain, the "straight talker" claimed credit for passage of the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights he opposed.

When Fighting Dem Jim Webb vowed to give patriots who enlisted after 9/11 the same opportunity for a first-class education offered to the greatest generation after World War Two, McCain said NO.

When dozens of Veterans Service Organization led by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and VoteVets.org, and bipartisan Congressional majorities led by Fighting Dem Senator Jim Webb (D-VA), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Senate Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Congressman Harry Mitchell (D-AZ), pushed to make the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights a reality, McCain said NO.

When Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton endorsed the 21st Century Bill of Rights, McCain said NO -- even going so far as to offer his own watered-down so-called substitute.

But the Fighting Dems beat back the Bush-McCain opposition, the bill sailed through the Congress and now -- rather than admit he was wrong -- McCain is claiming credit for the bill he opposed at every turn. Today in Ohio McCain said:

"I'm happy to tell you that we probably agreed to an increase in educational benefits for our veterans that not only gives them increase in their educational benefits, but if they stay in for a certain period of time than they can transfer those educational benefits to their spouses and or children."

Here's WSJ giving McCain Credit where there is none:

New GI Bill's Recruiting Impact Debated
By Yochi J. Dreazen and Sarah Lueck

WASHINGTON -- The government is set to offer the biggest boost to veterans' education benefits since the concept was first created after World War II. That presents the Pentagon with a pressing question: Will the offer of a free education cause it to lose more troops than it can attract?

The new incentives are part of a war-funding bill that the Senate approved Thursday and that President Bush is expected to sign into law within days. The benefits will cover the cost of a four-year public college degree for veterans who have served at least three years of active duty ...

What does McCain mean by ‘we’?
Posted June 27th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

There was a vote last night in the Senate on the war supplemental, which included the Webb/Hagel GI Bill. The spending bill, including the expanded education benefits for veterans, passed overwhelmingly (92 to 6), and will be added to the $165 billion that the House and Senate have already approved for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The roll-call is online; every Democrat, and most Republicans, voted for the bill. John McCain, as is now common, didn’t show up for work. Barack Obama was there, and he voted for the funding.

What’s especially interesting, though, is McCain’s response to last night’s vote.

McCain, campaigning in Ohio, told voters, “I’m happy to tell you that we probably agreed to an increase in educational benefits for our veterans that not only gives them increase in their educational benefits, but if they stay in for a certain period of time than they can transfer those educational benefits to their spouses and or children. That’s a very important aspect I think of incentivizing people of staying in the military.”

Is that so. McCain is “happy” to promote a bill “we” passed to help veterans with their education benefits.

You’ve. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me.

As regular readers no doubt recall, McCain opposed the Webb/Hagel GI Bill. He actively fought against it.

Remember this?

The Senate approved a $194.1 billion wartime spending bill Thursday that promises a greatly expanded GI education benefit for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan…A Vietnam veteran himself, McCain has opposed Webb’s bill as overly generous to veterans at the expense of career military officers and NCOs. McCain did not return to the Capitol for Thursday’s votes…

Indeed, McCain’s opposition nearly scuttled the bill.

What’s more, when the Obama campaign began hitting McCain over this, he got pretty touchy about it.

And now he wants voters to think he supported the bill all along? That “we” — by implication, including himself — increase “educational benefits for our veterans”?

Even by McCain standards, this is pretty outrageous.

John McCain Disagrees With John McCain Once Again

http://blog.indecision2008.com/2008/06/27/john-mccain-disagrees-with-john-mccain-once-again/

Senate Overwhelmingly Passes GI Bill. McCain Absent. Bush Threatens Veto
Today, by an overwhelming 75-22 margin, the Senate passed the "Post-9/11 GI Bill" as part of the war supplemental funding bill. This bipartisan legislation, originally introduced by Senators Jim Webb (D-VA), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and John Warner (R-VA), is whole-heartedly endorsed by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation's first and largest nonpartisan Iraq veterans' organization, and all the leading Veterans Service Organizations. See how every Senator voted here.

Breaking: McCain Skips Vote On 21st Century G.I. Bill

By Greg Sargent - May 22, 2008, 1:15PM
The Senate just voted to pass Jim Webb's 21st Century version of the G.I. bill, which would greatly expand educational benefits to veterans.

Guess who skipped it?

John McCain.

How about we contact General Wes Clark who will be appearing on Face the Nation tomorrow and mention this to him, in case he hadn't heard what John McCain said?

113. You and Bill both need to get behind
the Democratic candidate, like apparently Hillary has. That is if it's party and not egos that are driving you both. If Obama offered to help the Clintons with the enormous debt they created for themselves with this campaign, then that shows a CLASS act which is not something I expect out of Bill. He has disappointed me sorely over the past few years...first with the cozying up with G.H.W. * and then with his behavior on the campaign trail. I think his mouthiness hurt his wife more than helped her. Now it's time to concentrate on taking back all the Houses, not lick ego wounds. He should thank Obama for his offer, not tell him to "kiss my ass." He's trashing his own legacy.

It's classless and phony.

But that doesn't gut my constitution.

McCain's vote on the FISA bill, though is something that I will always hold against him. He's gutting my civil rights with that vote, he's putting the basis of Roe v Wade at risk, and he's tearing down the rule of law.

Now do you get it?

27. I can't save politicians from making dumb moves. I can try to warn them, I can
let them know that myself and a whole lot of people may be rather pissed off at them if they do something stupid, or worse.

But in the end, it's their call.

I can't throw them in jail after all. I can't put words into their mouths and make them say them.

Have you checked out this myobama group? http://my.barackobama.com/page/group/SenatorObama-PleaseVoteAgainstFISA

It's almost 2000 members strong. It was created on Thurs. evening. By mid next week, it's quite likely to be the 2nd largest group on the Obama site.

Last night our Montana Public Radio Station local news had it's regular rotating commentary, and the guest editorialist was Terry Kendrick, a local mover and shaker who works with the Dems, the Human Rights Commision, Votewr Registration Drives for low income women, etc. She basically said that her enthusiasm was turning into mush. She started out pushing for Obama but if things kept going like this, she's just going to show up and vote and that's about it. This goes to homes all over the state, because MTPR has repeaters all over the state. She mentioned 2 issues. FISA and Obama's economic advisers. Well his advisers were old news, so to speak. It was FISA that pushed her over the line to make her broadcast.

So right now, instead of putting my energies toward defeating McCain, I'm concentrating on saving Obama from himself or his handlers or whoever it was that had the brilliant idea that flip flopping on FISA was a good move, both politically and in policy terms.

And in how many has Obama "betrayed" "US" (Who T F are "us" anyway?)????

You'll be looking for decades to find a candidate that agrees with you on EVERY issue! Oh, so Obama betrayed you on the FISA bill? If you don't support him, who will win? McCAIN!!! Guess what, he didn't betray you on FISA because he supported it all the way.

Did you even BOTHER to read Obama's talk about FISA and why he felt he should support it in it's final revised version? I'll bet not. He had good, rational, and practical reasons. Give it a read.

Actually, no. I agree that this is an issue that deserves more, not less, media attention. If I get another piece of hate mail I'm taking it to my local police station (a woman's name attached to one of my LTTEs somehow elicited a rather nasty sexual innuendo in the anonymous hate mail I got).

The republican are attacking him on it already if this continues he will blow this election just like Kerry did . Not only that but its a slap in the face to the people that supported him because they felt he would not cave in to the republican and bow down to there every wish .

This thread is about slamning John McCain, and I don't see a contribution from you on this.

The only political mistakes being made are from those who believe they know better what needs to be done, but at the same time, have never run for national office before and don't really know what they are talking about in terms of political consequences.

Obama is the one who won the primaries....but somehow, it is you who believes to know how to win elections. How is that?

85. I alerted on several people last week who were breaking the
rules about what they were saying about Obama and what they were advocating. I have been sick in bed for a week sick, but when I would get up for a few minutes to check in, there they would still be here, posting the same things. So I hope you have better luck with your alerts. As for me, I don't know how long I can keep coming here with this stuff going on, especially with my illness. Like Frenchie Cat and several others of you, I want to get down to attacking the opponent and his party. I am not into taking down my own or continuing the Clinton vs Obama theme that some are determined to continue pushing.

I'm tired of the media kissing mccain's behind while making snide remarks about Obama. I am tired of coming here to find thread after tread attacking Obama. I got tired the other day of the the talking heads tearing apart the Obama/Clinton unity rally. I got tired of hearing them ask where Bill Clinton was. I wanted to scream at the tv that he was in Africa with a lot of other people celebrating Mandela's brithday. I am already tired of all this stuff, but then I am just sick and tired anyway. Maybe when I feel better physically, I'll be able to deal with this kind of crap.

Yet he doesn't want the GIs now to receive the same benefits. He's an evil asshole.

They have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

McCain has voted against the last 9 or 10 veterans bills.
He didn't even show up to vote against this one.

And then they wonder why veterans can't stand that piece of shit.

I could not agree more about that, lots of ammunition ... really GOOD ammo. That the bad guys are making it so easy should not be boring to anybody really concerned about getting our candidate elected. It really rather excites me as a point in fact.

I'm in. You can count on me to help any way I can. I'm a bit new to this "working from within" a party stuff and appreciate any pointers on how to use the info other than just sharing it with people I know. I also could use a little help with some terminology and abbreviations around here that I'm not familiar with although I'm starting to figure it out I think for instance

OP is original post?
Kick means posting to OP so it goes to the top?
Rec meaning Recommend as per the button I'm not allowed to use yet?
n/t ???

There's been more I can't seem to recall right off, is there a post or a forum somewhere one of you might direct me to? I'd be grateful, I'm really not looking to be off topic.

Great post. I want to fight the bad guys too.

70. Cool!
:hi:

I wrote this as an LTTE in reference to McCain and this issues:

Dear Editors,

Senator John McCain actively campaigned against the GI Bill of Education Rights that passed by a margin of 75 to 22 in the Senate last week, yet I haven’t heard an ounce of criticism in the mainstream media about this. It wouldn’t be so bad, if John McCain had bothered to vote against it, as he had advocated that his senate colleagues should, but he didn’t even bother to show up to vote at all.

Worse still, John McCain is now on record of taking credit for the bill’s passage as he now praises it in his stump speech, while leaving out the details of his fight against it with the then rationale that the bill was "too much" of a good thing that it would discourage our fighting men and women to stay in the Armed Forces. In fact, there is a video of John McCain doing such, and yet the media is silent on his disingenuous posturing on this issue.

When will the media scrutinize John McCain’s action as well as his words? I’m still waiting; meanwhile, it appears that once again, John McCain gets a pass. Not only do I want to know when John McCain will be held accountable for his words on the campaign trail, but I also want to know by whom?

Respectfully,

XXXXXXXXXXXX

PS. I sent it to the some media contacts, but there I included the backup sources as they are in this op.

I've sent out 13 letters thus far.

They're utterly vile and despicable. I feel like I need to disinfect my monitor after stumbling on one this morning. The Republicans can't really point to anything positive about their candidate, so they resort to thinly veiled slander against ours. Taking credit for other people's work also seems par for the course.

Yeah, I have my quarrels with Obama - particularly the FISA issue. But the man's so many light-years ahead of the competition I'm going to work like hell to make sure he's elected.

90. Here's the sad truth....
Now that the illusion of ideological perfection has been exposed as not so perfect, the op and others are upset that some people are finally asking questions, and making character judgements based upon facts. Although Obama has gone back on his word concerning the FISA bill, his more "avid" supporters will point to McShame, and try and convince us that his vote for the FISA bill is somehow worse than Obama's because, well, he's a republican.
Another sad truth is that at this point in the campaign, the democratic nominee should be leading any repug, including a resurrected St. Reagan, by at least thirty to forty points. I'll ask, why isnt this the case? I don't expect, nor desire an answer to that question, for the simple reason, hindsight is twenty-twenty, and obvious.
So, for all all who cannot deal with the revelation of fallacy on a realistic basis, welcome to the real world, where adoration, fauning, swooning, and blind loyalty is not enough to sustain Obama's walk on water to the presidency. I hope Obama wins, and he's getting my vote, but at least I can make my choice based upon the fact that McCain is unacceptable, and that a "not so perfect" Democrat is much more preferable. We had our chance at total slam-dunk with a history making landslide, but decided to risk the possibility of an overwhelming victory based upon a naive, and flawed ideology that most of the country was not, realistically, ready to accept. The chickens are finally coming home to roost, and the Democratic Party better be ready to find a few broken eggs. Instead of crying about it, they should learn how to make an omelette that minimizes the damage. The revelation that the MSM is not, and has never been, a friend to the Democratic Party should have been obvious from the start, and the "tingle" Tweety Matthews felt run up his leg hearing one of Obama's speech, was not one of admiration, but one of anticipation of the general election. Gore, Kerry, and Deja Vu. Thanks.

101. Why; that was rational, honest, insightful, and of course true... Thank you!
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 12:43 PM by rtassi
I don't imagine it will matter much to the op though. Holding the dear Senator to the highest standards, like telling the truth, and doing what he promised to do, doesn't appear to matter to the faithful, while it appears to be perfectly OK to disparage anyone who sees things differently. Reversing his position on FISA is only the beginning ... The Democratic party has shafted us over and over again, and yet we still won't face the truth about our own. A sadder truth for me is, that no candidate however well intentioned, or hyped, can or will bring about the change some Americans desire. All Candidates for this high office must, by the nature of the system, be compromised before they are allowed to run ... Obama will get my vote also, but I am many decades past the illusion of a savior in the White House.

About time someone steps up and points out the folly of many DU'ers here. Sometimes I wonder if I wandered into some conservative website or something. It's great to see some people pointing out that it's McCAIN we should be attacking.

Thanks again.

Enlistees now have to stay active longer to obtain benefits! Just another way to keep enlistees in the army longer! It's F*CKING DISGRACE!

124. I've heard DUers bitch and moan about Obama voting "present" on certain bills...
but have they delved into McSame's "absent" and "present" votes? He hasn't voted or shown up to do work in the Senate since April. Far too busy campaigning!! x(

Why haven't DUer's spent time condemning McSame's warmongering and Bush-loving record? We need to be doing just that than crying over Obama's statements or policy positions. As much as I hate it, he MUST appeal to the Center/Moderates if we want to win this thing.
