Breaking: McCain's California home in tax default; havn't paid taxes in four years
Newsweek is set to publish a highly embarrassing report on Sen. John McCain, revealing that the McCains have failed to pay taxes on their beach-front home in La Jolla, California, for the last four years and are currently in default, The Huffington Post has learned.

Under California law, once a residential property is in default for five years, it can be sold at a tax sale to recover the unpaid taxes for the taxpayers.

The McCains own at least seven homes through a variety of trusts and corporations controlled by Cindy McCain.

And the bank would probably already be foreclosing. But hey... the uber-rich dont have to play by the same rules as us poor shmucks. Its the people without money that get porked the hardest.

158. Arrears on taxation, not mortgage default
I rather doubt the property has an outstanding mortgage. And it's standard practice that after five years' default on taxes, the property is auctioned by the State.

102. A Good Neighbor...........
I was only earning $5.000. per year, so wound up in another state working at a job there, with tenent in my house ( owned, no mortgage, trying to save it)
My neighbor got wind of the news that my tenent was planning to buy my house cheap at a tax sale, and wrote me a letter. My daughter and son-in -law fortuntely were able to pay the back taxes............
That tenant was real scum a con man ( confidence inspiring) He had his friends who helped him move in, bring me several boxes of things I had stored, and needed. They brought them to where I worked ( a 550 mile trip) and put them right in my truck. ( He was from Philly, I was in Jersey, the house was in Maine) But, after the first month, he never paid rent for 8 months..........At least I didn't have to pay a lawyer to extricate him from the house, but in vengance he tried a smear on my reputation, but the Postmaster recognized his handwriting and pulled all the letters & reported him.
He then subscribed me to over 300 magazines, ( World wrestling Federation to a female artist in her 50's!)forcing me to spend most of the summer calling and cancelling them!
I sued him in small claims court and won $3,000. BUT he declared bankruptcy, ( in spite of my giving the bank account numbers of his 2 out of state bank accounts)
14 years later I am still $3.000. behind trying to play catch up. What would the interest have been on that money through the 90's? But I OWN the house, & on my SS income, couldn't afford the poorest rent anywhere!
LAst I heard of that guy, he had caretaken a house through the winter & TRASHED IT!
He was ON PROZAC! & PERCADIN!
Way to go BIG PHARMA!

129. One small suggestion
It sounds like you had an awful encounter with a total scumbag.

I once won a small claims court judgement, but the person refused to pay. Someone told me to file a lien against her house, so I did it. I waited about 20 years, but when she finally sold her house, she was forced to pay all the liens she owed, and I got my $300. She turned out to have a lot of people that she owed money to.

You might check if there's some way you can file a lien against him.

23. I am reminded of Paris Hilton's response when a judge
chastised her for failing to comply with the terms of a legal arrangement after she got into trouble. She said she wasn't aware of what she was supposed to do, because no one told her. The judge pointed out that a letter was sent to her, but she explained that she doesn’t read her own mail:
I have people who do that for me,” she told a judge. And legal documents and traffic citations elude her. “I just sign what people tell me to sign," she testified.” http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/05/07/arts/peeptue.php

73. no, it's La Jolla
It's an area just north of the city of San Diego. Loads and loads of rich old white people live there. It is, I think, the most disgusting place I've ever been to in my life. I'm sure they go there because it's on the beach, but they don't have to deal with anything like culture that might confront them in other communities.

I read elsewhere (since I posted that), that it's a relative of his wife (an aunt or something) who actually lives in the house. Those are the sort of people who live there, for sure. McCain is too much of a young whipper-snapper himself.

There is a least one DU'er I know of who lives in La Jolla. My ex-wife--probably more liberal than me--lives in La Jolla. One of my very liberal co-workers and friends live in La Jolla. And none of them are anywhere near rich.

Disgusting? No Culture? Find someplace else to spew your shit.

I've maintained for some time that Los Angeles is the toilet of American, and Sand Diego is the bidet. Yeah, I know that lots of different people live there. I have a friend who's lived there, and it's not as if I've only ever been there because my car broke down or something. I'm so sorry that I disrupted your message board with my opinion. Do you know of one where I'm welcome to post my own opinion? I think that would fascinate me.

Also La Jolla is home to dozens of bio-tech companies.

That's where UCSD is, where I have friends who go to school and teach. They're some of the best in the world. The town still sucks. It's not as if there's anything indigenous to La Jolla, culture-wise. Every hear people talk about La Jolla style blues? country? No. It's a wasteland in that regard. Traditional La Jolla cooking? No.

155. I get what you're saying, however---

there is no Santa Monica style blues,
no traditional Santa Monica cooking,
no Santa Monica dialect( that I know of)

yet--

Santa Monica
( aka the Republic of Santa Monica) ;)
is one of the most interesting cities
on the southern West Coast.

I know- I grew up there.

:)

The people make the town.
With the influence of several institutions
of higher learning, I doubt that La Jolla is
a cultural wasteland.

Have you ever been to La Jolla? There's plenty of rich people here, but there's also many liberals and lots of culture.

Some parts are disgusting like the luxury shops on Prospect or some of the houses on Mount Soledad, but at the same time there's UCSD, the loads of quaint beach homes, the museums, La Jolla Cove, the Children's Pool, Black's Beach, etc.

Yes, of course I've been there, which is how I am able to form an opinion about the place. Man, I read shit that people write on this website all of the time saying bad things about so-called "red states" and the people who live in them, but if I state my opinion on a particular town that I've been to and think is complete shit, it's like I just pissed on your mother's grave. What the hell is it with people on this board and La Jolla? Really?

people from foreign shores (lots of Saudis), I wonder why our elected officials don't do a study of how many of these defaulters don't pay their taxes. It's especially egregious since our property taxes are only 1%. Maybe Arnold could find the money to balance the state books if he sent the collectors after them.

We don't seem to let stories such as fingergate and Snubgate die.....I'm not sure why we should let this one.

YOu see if the media read the Bloggers talking about it, they will not want to have some other Media vulture getting all of the glory.

If we get as upset with this as some did in reference to Edwards' house, Clinton's taxes not being released, and Obama's Rezco, then we have a chance.

So if we aren't interested, why would the Corporate media?

But then, we were pretty interested, loud, and obvious when we took to the streets across the country and across the world leading up to the invasion, but the media ignored that so well that my mother (in rural Michigan) hadn't heard about the protests until I showed her photos I took. Sadly, there are a lot of older folks who tend to not surf the blogs but who do tend to show up and vote. And even when they hear about stuff all-afire online, when the CM actually reports it, they dismiss it as being from that crazy, young, blogoshere crowd. Really, the Repukes have stolen two elections but if people aren't taking to the streets protesting electronic voting, they'll forget about McCain's lack of paying taxes in just one short news cycle.

God, I'm getting cynical. :(

*Edited to add, I think the one place this would play very well is in a campaign ad. Obama's been putting out awesome campaign ads. And if there's one thing you can count on it's that station's bottom line will trump corporate ideology almost every time--so they'll take Obama's money and air the ads. :D

MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann, who spotlights misbehavior nightly with his "Worst Person in the World" recognition, owes New York state for unpaid business taxes, according to a tax warrant notice.

Keith Olbermann Hit with New York Tax Bill

New York (June 17, 2008)
By WebCPA staff
|

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann was on the receiving end of a tax warrant from New York State charging him with $2,269.50 in back taxes for his Los Angeles-based business, Olbermann Broadcasting Empire.

An MSNBC spokesperson told the Associated Press that the matter was a bookkeeping disagreement between Olbermann's accountants and New York State that had been resolved months ago.

Olbermann's show, "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," has proven to be a popular draw on MSNBC, but has provoked ire for frequently lampooning President Bush, Sen. Hillary Clinton and rival Bill O'Reilly at Fox News Channel.

If there was any 'there' there with this, why hasn't there been any further stories on it? I'm sure Olbermann has made enemies; it'd be all over these 'tubes' if there was any validity.

I cited ABC. And? I cited an AP report that ABC carried. AP is not an interested party, unlike the ANONYMOUS "MSNBC spokesman", who is an interested party, being part of Olbermann's channel.

And what's with the logic that "There were no further stories therefore Olbermann didn't owe taxes" logic? That's not a logical argument, my friend.

Her elderly Aunt lives in the condo. It is owned by a trust that a bank manages. The tax bills went to a bad address and got returned. Bank doing a crappy job. Maybe even Cindy dropping the ball. But this doesn't say much about John McCain - imo.

More and more the Dems are stooping to yellow-journalism and Drudge-like attacks. Very sad, imo. Are we going to play tit-for-tat because of how Kerry and his wife were treated.

114. Four years?
My mortgage company failed to pay the taxes held in escrow one year, and we heard about it two months later - with a very serious letter from the county, a penalty, and the demand that we pay up immediately. We were shocked that the mortgage company hadn't done what they were supposed to do, but the county didn't budge on the penalty. We got the taxes and penalty paid within a week.

McCain is in default for FOUR YEARS.

148. It is the responsibility of the property owner, bad address or not, .....
to ensure that all proparty taxes are paid. 4 years is way too long for anyone (rich or poor) to ignore taxes that they owe on property they own.

And, I don't give a rat's ass if the property is some sort of trust-owned property by his wife, McShame should make sure that his wife doesn't cross the line and if she does, then HE must pay the price, especially if it is bad PR for his campaign.

go the way of the Charlie Black story.....I may be wrong, and I hope I am, but what evidence is there to support the idea that this important symbolic message will have any effect on McCain's narrated image as the stand-up truthtelling maverick? they'll find a way to turn it around by describing any attempt by the dems to keep it running as "tiresome," which is EXACTLY the word Jay Carney used to characterize Richard benVeniste's call for Black's firing, one DAY after that story broke. One day of coverage was too TIRING for Carney to suffer. that's what Obama faces.

or the McCain lying about supporting the recent Veterans' bill

did you see ANYthing at all about that on TV the last few days?

if you thought media coverage in 2000 and 2004 was horrendous, you'll be BEGGING for that sort of fair and balanced coverage after the conventions have come and gone. they're just getting warmed up

the racist aspects of this campaign are going to blow you away; just watch and see

you saw what Norquist said. did you see ANY mention of that on TV, about which it's been said that if you don't see it there, it didn't happen, and I didn't see it there, and it's too late for it to be a story any more

86. according to this, real estate taxes in California depend more on WHEN they were purchased than
what they're worth:
Warren Buffet's case is the example:

http://wealthandwant.com/docs/Buffett_Prop13.html

What I said in respect to property taxes was very specific. I gave him an example of three houses, two in Laguna Beach and one in Omaha.

The first Laguna Beach house is a property that I bought in the early 1970s. It has a current market value of about $4 million and, because of the limitations embodied in Proposition 13, carried taxes of only $2,264 in 2003 vs. $2,241 in 2002.
The second house, located just in back of the first, is one that I purchased in the mid-1990s. It has a market value of about $2 million and, simply because I bought it later than the first, carried taxes of $12,002 in 2003 vs. $11,877 in 2002.
I pointed out to Joe that these figures mean that the tax rate on the second house -- same neighborhood, same owner, same ability to pay -- is roughly 10 times the rate on the first house.

I then referenced my house in Omaha, which I believe to be worth about $500,000 (though it's assessed at $690,000). Taxes on it were $14,401 in 2003 and $12,481 in 2002.

market

Index

Laguna Beach (purchased early 1970s)

Laguna Beach (purchased mid 1990s) $2,000,000 $12,002
.6001%

Omaha
$500,000
$14,401
2.8802%

...........

the above numbers are based on the table at the link....couldn't reproduce here, but they show the difference in rates, which, especially in California are STRIKING--->.0566 percent vs. .6001 percent, 10 times higher for one property, which sits right next to the other, the only difference being when they were bought

I paid $195,000 for my house in 1996, and even though the value of my house is now around $600,000, my property taxes are $2200 per year.

91. like - this isn't real - I mean wow.. this kind of thing would sink a NORMAL candidate
this is embarrassing - you mean to tell me NONE of the other campaigns for office, like Romney or Giuliani, could vet this info???

Shocking...

this crap is enough to slam him with, for regular folks, and help sink him in Iowa/Indiana and possibly Missouri...

The GOP Shadow Govt has begun the process of installing their candidate. McCain is untenable at the top of the ticket now. Who steps forward will tell us a lot, about what the future will hold for Obama.

Between this and his generally poor performance as a candidate, I'd be surprised if there is not a dump McCain movement prior to the Repub convention. Wouldn't that be fun to watch?

133. Is this the house that Mrs. McCain stayed in for a few months
while she recovered from a stroke that occurred because she stopped taking her high blood pressure meds? She said that she stopped because at 49 she thought that she was too young to be taking that med.

137. Prolly just one of the reasons why they refused to release Cindy's tax info
The people born of uber-privilege have the unmitigated nerve to call Obama 'elite', meanwhile they don't even pay their taxes.

Additional personal outrage: We pay higher taxes on our modest home then the mcCain's (are supposed to) do on their 4 million dollar beach house. :grr: :argh:

141. My wife made a good point. This is a failure of his CAMPAIGN
A good campaign committee should KNOW EVERYTHING about their candidate, whether good or bad.

If it's good, incorporate it.

If it's bad, fix it or prepare something immediately for damage control.

It seems like Team McCain was caught with it's pants down on this one.
