McCain is a joke, and though he tows the neocon line, they know that the simpleton is not really one of them. His campaign so far is a joke. Hell, look at Colbert's "green screen" entries. The Repukes have no shame; "Senators" Craig and Vitter cosponsored the Defense of Marriage Act. The Repukes in Congress will have no problem with "taking" McCain off the ticket. Anybody who saw or read David Addington's contemptuous response to Congress this week knows that these people will stop at nothing, and that this nation and its history means NOTHING to them. Only power matters.

I simply don't see this farce going on. I believe there are quiet conversations at the highest levels of the White House and among GOP power brokers as to what could change, and that those conversations include what might happen to McCain, Barack and the election itself.

Conspiratorial? With this gang, I don't think so. We are in for some ugly stuff. They are beginning to understand that relying on Hannity and Rush won't be enough. And they will move accordingly.

McCain will continue to play the role of "Commander In Chief" emphasis on military ---

They have to keep it going -- especially the polls trying to show that McCain is viable and

winning! --- and work on the steal behind the scenes.

And . . . the religious nuts went down in flames ---

Romney and what's his name? ---

Don't think they'll be bringing them back for a VP encore ---

4. The base couldn't cohere enough to get behind anyone but McCain
and in addition, the rest of the field was even more mushroom-hallucinations-at-high-noon-in the-desert bizarre they couldn't stop a guy whose Straight Talk Express was running on fumes.

The junta could once peddle bat guano sandwiches to their base, and the idiots chowed down hungrily. Not too much anymore. The idiots are beginning to drift away from the Emperor's Svengali, maybe because they sense through instinct that the smart money is going elsewhere. With a lot of things precarious now, there's only so much time to cash in on the Grand Old Gravytrain for the sleek Republican fatcats. I think whatever passes for the real right-wing braintrust has decided it's time to withdraw from the field. They'll be back, of course. But they'd be just as happy to go catch a breather and count their winnings from the game they've rigged so tenaciously. They're done for now, and if everything falls apart completely, as a direct consequence of everything they've done and deliberately not done, they're vindicated anyway because there were no more trickle-up pennies from hell in the offing.

As for the base, well, the braintrust will just screw them. After all, they've been doing it for decades and the idiots aren't even sharp enough to understand just who it is who has a knife to their ribs.

I think there's a much greater chance that they're scared about Congressional races this year. I think they wrote the Presidency off months ago. They still have the Judiciary, and it's been doing yeoman's work on their behalf, for the most part. That will do them for a while.

6. Well short of knocking him off
How else will they get him out of the way so they can put someone else in his place? And who do they have? The more I see of McCain, the more I think they let him have this "last" chance because they know they can't win, and they know that anybody they put up against the democrats this year would be beaten to a bloody pulp, so might at well let it be McCain that gets stomped on!

I see the republicans taking a loss this time so they can blame all the crap that will be coming down next year on the democrats. Bush has screwed things up so bad they need to get the heat off the republicans and put it on the democrats. They are hoping that things will get so bad that after 4 years they can come back with another Bush clone and take the country back. It's their only hope. They are already trying to blame high gas prices on the democrats for not letting big oil drill more off shore and in Alaska, and the idiots that support this bunch are buying it big time. What the democrats need to do is start planning now for what the republicans will do after Obama takes office. They also need to get a back bone and start doing things in congress to show the people that they can make the needed changes that we need to get this country on track. The hell with playing politics, they need to stand up to the republicans and make them vote on bills to get this country on track, like a bill regulating oil speculation, and any other way they can think of to lower gas prices. If the democrats take such a huge win in November in congress, they will not be able to say the republicans are stopping them from making changes, they will have the power, they just need to use it and not keep supporting big corporations instead of supporting the people of this country.

We have a huge chance to change things, but we can't sit back and play politics because we are afraid to stand up to the republicans and Bush. The people want action, not excuses!

7. Bingo. Everything you say is right on.
Nothing to disagree with. Except I don't think they will let this one go so as to stick the Dems with the mess. I don't think they will give up power on that basis. Obama, McCain or W is likely to go. Doesn't matter which one; they will move to consolidate any way it falls.

9. They will allow him to keep running if they think Republicans have no chance of winning in November.
I think that's why he got the nomination to begin with. The guys at the top know its a lost cause this year.
