How will we stop the MSM from its double standard?
When Michelle Obama said, "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of America," it got massive media play. Even as Cindy McCain continued to drag out the issue, it got tremendous media play.

However, when footage was found of John McCain saying, "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company," it got negligible coverage.

Both statements clearly involve a degree of hyperbole, but McCain's statement I would have thought would have generated more news since he's the presumptive Republican nominee, while Michelle is not running for office.

Do you think Obama will continue to face this kind of double standard on the part of the MSM? Do you think this double standard reflects racism or sexism? Why isn't there more of an effort to make the MSM give McCain's comments the same amount of attention it gave Michelle's comments?

And also, whose ads will be more potent? Republican ads showing Michelle Obama's comment, or Democratic ads showing John McCain's comment?

1. That would be the dumbest ad ever
Sure just go and tout the war hero record of our opponent.

2. You consider him a war hero?
Odd that you're taking the RNC version of his history, when on both the right and left there are versions that suggest he was no hero.

4. Here's a good article on the subject
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1999-03-25/news/is-john-mccain-a-war-hero/

It includes this little ditty:

WHEN JOHNNY GOES FLYING TO HANOI
(sung to the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home")

When Johnny goes flying to Hanoi,
He's got some gall!
We know it's just a political ploy.
That's all! That's all!
For he will spend his nights and days
selling out our MIAs.
And we'd sure be glad if he never came home again!

When Johnny goes sailing 'cross the sea,
He's got some guts.
To suck up to the enemy,
and kiss their butts,
He'll have a ball in old Hanoi
sneaking round with his joy-boy.
And we'd sure be glad if he never came home again!
When Johnny hits ground in Vietnam,
Poohbah! Poohbah!
We hope he forgets his way back home.
We'll shout "HURRAH"!
Oh, Hanoi, grant our fondest wish,
and keep that low-life son-of-a-*****!
And we'd sure be glad if he never came home again!
--song by Arizona POW/MIA activists, 1993

5. So, you probably believe that Kerry was not a hero either?
Both Kerry and McCain served their country honorably, to think otherwise is ridiculous

6. I think that war was even worse than the current fucked war.
So I am reluctant to ascribe the value 'war hero' to either Kerry or McCain. Both volunteered to go kill foreigners who had done nothing at all to harm us or attack us. I continue to refuse to worship at the altar of Mars despite the last eight years of stultifying flag waving idiocy.

7. If you like Lieberman, you have a point
It's not our job to defend McCain, but I certainly think his comment about not loving America is as "bad" as Michelle comment about not being proud of America, and the media should have given them equal attention.

As far as McCain's war record, if he wants to tout that, then he has to accept the risks. As you might not realize the attacks on Kerry were politically motivated, and that's how politics works like it or not. If McCain touts his record, then questions will be raised. That's the name of the game. The Republicans would like us to take the high road, as Gore and Kerry did.

8. At any rate, this thread is about the MSM's double standard ...
... not McCain's war record. You can call him an American hero if you want. After all the word "hero" is used very loosely these days. It doesn't take much. By virtue of being a POW, I don't think one is a hero, but I would agree one is a victim.
