Obama to take on McCain 'the Chicago way'

A commuter train rattles along one of Chicago's signature overhead tracks. Barack Obama has been on his own journey through this city.

He spent nearly 20 years navigating his way through Chicago's rugged political landscape, beginning as a baby-faced community organiser in the predominantly black south side.

Veteran Democratic strategist Don Rose describes Senator Obama as "one of the very best networkers that I've ever seen in politics or social life or business life or whatever".
Mr Rose says Senator Obama forged politically useful ties with Chicago's academic, legal and Jewish communities.
"We saw Barack Obama build, two, three, four, five, six, seven different networks in Chicago in a very, very fast time," he said.
These networks helped propel the young lawyer into the Illinois Senate in 1996.

Abner Mikva, a former US congressman and Senator Obama's political mentor, says the candidate showed his steel by ruthlessly unseating a Democratic incumbent.
He says beneath the inspirational speeches and the idealism lies a "very good hard-nosed politician, and that's what makes him so special".

-snip-
All those years in the rough and tumble of Chicago politics have helped prepare the Democratic nominee for his biggest political test yet.
Mr Rose says Republican John McCain underestimates his younger opponent at his own peril.
"There was a line from a movie, The Untouchables, which Obama started quoting once and he had to back off because it sounded a little too violent. But it went, you know, 'When we're in this fight, if they bring a knife, we'll bring a gun' and so on. They called it the Chicago way," he said.
If the presidential campaign descends into a political street fight at least Senator Obama will be well prepared.
