Cheri Jacobus: "Americans could use a little cash to buy an extra bag of marshmallows." |
|
She made this remark while pushing McCain's gas tax holiday ploy on MSNBC a few minutes ago after making an equally ludicrous assertion that McCain is "in touch" with ordinary folks and essentially understands the economic difficulties they are facing. I want some one to include this in an internet ad that has the potential of going viral.
Please, please, please....

The Obama spokesperson cracked up and called her on it by saying that he didn't realize the energy problems of the nation were about marshmallows.

6. I believe it is as accurate as I can be. |
|
Now if you want me to put down wit h a high degree of accuracy the talking over that was going on there, I'd be hard pressed to do that but she said that. Perhaps someone else heard it as well.

9. I missed what she said but heard the response to her, referring to her mentioning |
|
marshmallows. So I can confirm that it had something to do with marshmallows.
Have been googling trying to find the exact quote, from another source, but haven't found it yet. Hope someone has video...

It was in context of Americans saving money via the proposed "gas tax holiday," and she said Americans might have more money to stay an extra night (or nights, can't remember which) at a campground. The marshmallow comment then came in, like a quip at the end. You know, camping...marshmallows on the fire....
The main thrust of the quote was not about marshmallows.
I don't watch those shows much during that hour and I have never seen her on any of the talk shows I usually watch. But I recognize that she is a Republican. My point is that we don't need to twist or take their comments out of context. Let's get it right. There's enough to slam them with. When we get it wrong and slam them, we look like THEY do, which is stupid.
I know I'll get slammed here for urging people to get a quote (or context) correct, but oh well....

12. It's not better in context |
|
It's still a flippant "let them eat cake" kind of remark. Reeks of condescension and utter cluelessness of most people's situations. I can just picture her with other GOP strategists, talking about how to sell the Gas Tax Holiday: "Don't most of the riff raff go camping in the summer?" "Yeah! Camping! Talk about how they can afford an extra night at the KOA...Make it even more tangible by mentioning marshmallows! The yokels just love to roast marshmallows, from what I hear!"

14. It was insulting...context aside.. |
|
At this time, people are concerned about being able to afford driving to their jobs (if they are not in danger of losing that, too) or being able to meet their grocery budgets or pay for heating their homes. The idea that tossing them a couple of dollars so they could afford an extra bag of marshmallows--forget freaking lattes--is an insult. Period.

5. Jacobus is a motor mouth, who constantly interrupts the other side, with impunity, I might add. |

The MSNBC talking heads, including David Schuster, exercise no control of her whatsoever.

8. But, but, but ... then we couldn't afford to buy gas to start a fire to toast them. |
|
Why won't they instead let us eat cake?
