Tim Kaine = Jim Webb + Hispanic voter appeal (he speaks fluent Spanish and lived in Central America)
+ Catholic/Christian voter appeal (he has served as a Jesuit missionary) + real world experience dealing with housing crises (he passed up big dollar corporate law jobs to dedicate his legal practice to helping those who suffered housing discrimination based on race, disability, etc.) + Missouri voter appeal (he's from Missouri and went to college there) - Webb's military experience (which is OK because a VP with strong military experience frames the debate in the exact terms McBush prefers) - 10% of Webb's charisma (which is OK because you want a VP in the background, not the foreground) = Obama/Kaine '08 with VA solidly blue

With Webb out of the VP sweepstakes, popular but term-limited VA Gov. Tim Kaine looks awfully good.

1. He has no foreign policy experience and little elected experience.
We have many fine Democrats to choose from besides people who just got elected to their office less than 2 years ago.

Obama needs someone with more experience than he has, not less.

3. Kaine has outside the beltway experience (city counsel, lt. gov., gov.). Obama needs someone who is
outside-the-beltway, not someone whose experience is in Washington DC.

7. 14 years of elected experience doesn't count unless it's
in DC?

I think Obma's pretty well disproved that notion.

8. Economy trumps foreign policy.
At this time I would be more concerned about a VP pick lacking in executive experience, rather than foreign policy experience.

15. I agree -- I think the only pressure about foreign policy experience
is because McCain is PERCEIVED to have it in spades.

And Obama can surround himself with heavy hitters in FP -- hell, he's on the Foreign Relations Committee. He's got some impressive names on his FP Advisory Board (which has lost some of its oomph, IMO, since Clark is stepping away. (.)

The economy is uppermost in peoples' concerns now -- it's hard to get worked up about other things when you're afraid you won't have enough money to feed your family and pay for your gas to work.

2. From Wiki: (emphasis mine)
Vice Presidential speculation

Main article: United States presidential election, 2008

Kaine endorsed Senator Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries. Kaine's endorsement was claimed to be the first from a state-wide elected official outside of Illinois to endorse Obama's bid.<21> As a popular and successful governor of a southern state, Kaine might be a choice for vice-president.<22>

That's gotta mean something to Obama - especially since so many were tip-toeing endorsing for so long.

5. There is a segment of the Evangelical vote that (1) distrusts McBush, (2) believes that likely McVP
Romney worships the Anti-Christ, and (3) would be very attracted to a governor from a Southern State who has served as a missionary.

In the not-too-distant future, we may be routinely referring to "Obama Republicans" in the same offhand manner the people once referred to "Reagan Democrats."

13. Like Kerry, Biden, and numerous Catholic Democrats, Kaine is personally opposed to abortion but does
believe that his personal religious belief trumps Roe v. Wade.
