ZERO McCain bumper stickers from Raleigh to DC...
Edited on Mon Jul-07-08 10:54 PM by TWriterD
and back over the 4th.

I spotted at least a dozen for Obama, a couple for Hillary, and about four hold-outs for Bush/Cheney. One was an asshole in a massive pick-up truck hauling a jet ski who tailgated me; another some dude in a behemoth SUV who liked to weave in and out of four lanes of traffic on 95 South; another a Jesus-fish minivan; and the last a pick-up truck with a sign for "luxury fireplaces" (for all of the McMansions springing up in Raleigh).

Oh, and the SUVs passing me at 90 mph were rather impressive. What sort of mileage does an Escalade get at 90 mph?

2. In California, I've seen a grand total of TWO McSame stickers. Two.
I've seen literally countless Obama stickers. Countless. And I'm not talking about my extremly liberal area of Los Angeles, but all over LA, Orange, San Diego, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties- including some of the most conservative areas of these counties.

22. Don't do that!
Bob Barr stickers if you must.

They're probably not putting Mc* stickers on for a reason.

I think Jeremy Clarkson (of BBC Top Gear - yes he too is a conservative prick) had it right about some people here in the south: George Bush, Guns and Anti-Gays is religion.

Mark.

8. I saw a McCain sticker on a car pulled-over on the side of the rode.
I gave the woman standing next to it the finger as I went by.

And then I saw an ambulance pull up behind her.

I know that maybe I SHOULD have felt at least a little bit bad by then.

But you know what?

Nuh-uh.

25. I'm not sure.
Right now, they are refusing to even discuss politics with me; they won't take my bait. It's very interesting. My hubby and I turned to each other when DimSon was sailing into office, and basically predicted what would happen economically. Hubby had been in the oil and gas industry before he came to the Light, and, many years ago, I had done a ten-year or so stint in the defense contractor industry (became I went to the Light). So, we protected ourselves in a timely fashion. Others trusted DimSon and Co., despite our warnings, and now they are experiencing horrible financial ramifications (e.g. losing their homes, having trouble feeding their kids). When I give them food (I belong to a food coop, and just always happen to have extra), and I mutter about the attack on the middle class I worried about (and I mutter 'SON-OF-A-BLEEP'), they just giggle and look down, sigh. That's some neighbors. I also talk to various conservative. I would say, in total, they are confused by what has happened (and ill-informed).

36. Confused and ill-informed nails it.
I was pretty confused after my weekend in Northern Virginia -- the whining about "depressed" home values just about pushed me over the edge. This was from folks who bought $575K townhomes at market peak. "But housing prices always go up!," they proclaimed. One woman in particular (a defense contractor with about 7 languages...she's making good money) was waiting for Congress to bail her out of her ARM, lest she lose her home. And then there were the stay-at-home Moms whining about the $120 it takes to fill up their Suburbans--Suburbans to run Kody and Kaylee to soccer practice.

If people paid attention, they would have seen much of this coming, but I guess they figured the good times would last forever.

We stopped driving long distances a few years' back. We knew what would happen with * in office. We both work out of the home; but, I'm surrounded by those Cadillac Escalades. We're going to be able to stay in our home; I feel fortunate. We never up'd the mortgage, because of our reservations about how things would go. The value of our homes doubled, and then crashed. Our homes are probably worth a bit more than we paid for them; but, that's o.k. We got the nest egg, and are happy we built it. It will carry us through, hopefully, for we took our money out of stocks, etc. quite awhile ago. It's all divided up and insured. And, we're paying off what debt we can (while trying to help out the local food bank).

P.S. When I bought my Prius a few years' back, and Hubby bought his hybrid (the Honda) .. well, we were told how stupid we were. It turns out that there are advantages to getting around 45 - 51 MPG right now. Maybe we weren't so stupid ...

Take care!

:hi: I don't even know what McCain stickers look like but I've seen quite a few Obama stickers here and it's amazing me. The Inland Empire turns blue?! :bounce:

Even more encouraging....I just returned from a road trip from California to Arkansas and back and didn't see a single McCain sticker! Among the many Obama stickers, I saw a "Veteran's for Obama" sticker in Oklahoma on a pickup truck and other unexpected signs of the changing times...the marina owner in Arkansas where we rented a boat wore a peace sign tee shirt, a religious group soliciting money in front of a grocery store had an "Impeach Bush" sign on their table. Things are definitely looking up!

14. Not a good indicator, unfortunately....
As much as I'd like to think so, this isn't a great indicator of support for McCain. Much of McCain's core voters--white elderly conservatives, xenophobes, etc.--just aren't the type to be affixing bumper stickers to their cars. And yet, they will reliably turn out to the polls in November and cast their vote for McCain. Many of these people may even be un-enthused, but they do honor voting as their civic duty, and will cast their vote for the conservative. This post is based on living 95% of my life in red states.

18. Many conservatives don't consider him conservative.
I wonder how many of them will suck it up and vote, or sit it out.

I spotted an obnoxious number of Bush/Cheney stickers in 2000 and 2004, and that was in "blue" DC/Northern Virginia. I currently live in a neighborhood of many "white elderly conservatives" and they proudly display their B/C stickers, but no McCain. And there are plenty of xenophobic good ol' boys in this state with "Osama/Obama" stickers slapped on their vehicles, along with B/C. I just find it curious that I've seen so few McCain stickers.

20. That's what I find so curious...
the complete lack of enthusiasm. Although, I did spend some time with one enthusiastic McCain fan this weekend: the 13-year old son of a friend who responded with "McCain was a POW!" or "Obama will raise taxes!" to just about any point I made. His uncle works at the RNC and does an excellent job of brainwashing the poor kid.

21. Here in the Commonwealth
of course I'd like to see more Obama signage but I kid you not I've seen exactly ZERO McCain stuff. Nothing. Granted I live in Louisville but I've never seen this little enthusiasm for the GOP.

Obama may be in pockets around here but McSame is not motivating the base. If nothing stirs them up many will sit home, vote for Barr, and some even say they're going to go with Obama (the redeemable sorts that see the neocons as fascists or a best a wacky new form of liberal that sits worse with them than the Ted Kennedy/Tip O'Neal variety).

The right wing nut jobs say McCain is a liberal, he has no street cred with the Bible belt, and the money grubbers call him a socialist (same label usually assigned to Obama, except for the hardcore ones that call Obama a Marxist).
So, that leaves him with really just the hawks, the chickenshits, and the rubberstampers (many of which fit into existing categories), all of which he had locked in to start.

If turnout is high, we pretty much have it unless the GOP has some secret "stealth the vote" program.

Last I heard he was expected to siphon off 6% of the McCain vote. But we have our own problem with Nader.

I fully expect election fraud (after 2000 and 2004, how could we not?). And I'm still not convinced the current Maladministration will even relinquish power, to be honest. Yes, that sounds tin foilish, but "state of emergency" and postponed or canceled elections come to mind. Will Americans take to the streets? I'm not optimistic. Many are beaten down because of lost homes, off-shored jobs, limited or no health insurance, rising gas and food prices, no savings, etc.

The Loop was featured in the evening news last night -- Brian Williams acted as if biking were some big novelty. Woohoo, Brian, bike commuting!

34. What I have seen in Texas are "Nobama" stickers.
Kinda summs it up. There is no passion for McCain anywhere. For Republicans it is more about keeping Obama from winning. Kind of how it was like with Kerry last election. The election was more about "Hate Bush! Hate Bush!" than it was about electing Kerry.

The lack of passion never became more evident with Kerry than when Bill Clinton appeared on behalf of Kerry the first time. Clinton was given a rockstar reception. Kerry's welcome was at best, polite. But when it was over, everyone mobbed Clinton and Kerry stood there ignored. The only hands he shook were those of the people he walked up to himself. It was embarrassing and when I saw this I knew Bush was going to win.

It is the same with McCain, he is "just there" and his support is lukewarm at best. I have seen very few McCain stickers at all but the Nobama stickers are plentiful.

so it's probably not fair to compare him to Kerry. I'm not sure if that's the case now -- he definitely lost some of his luster during the primary season (at least to me).

If victory is determined by passion for Obama v. passion against Obama, I'd say we have it in the bag. In the bag, but do not let guard down for a minute. And GOTV!

I'm not surprised by the "Nobama" stickers (I've seen them on Facebook, etc.), but I wasn't counting on Texas anyway. Poor Austin (and whatever other progressive areas there are!).

and same here a few left over W04 ones and lots of Obama and thats it.

44. I'm in Tucson and I've yet to see a McSame sticker...
several Ron Paul hold outs running around but that's it. I expect to see quite a few "Obama/fillintheblank 08" sometime soon.

48. I have only seen ONE McCain sticker in the greater Houston area.
I still see the occasional Ron Paul Sticker, but I haven't seen a McCain one in over a month.

52. Which makes me wonder whether the mega-church crowd...
will be boarding buses the way it did for Boy Wonder.

GOTV is crucial. I drove folks to the polls in 2004 and look forward to doing it again in November. My Outback isn't quite a match for a charter bus, but it counts for sumthin'!
