Hell Just Froze Over on Hardball
Pat Buchanan just defended Obama's position on the Iraq War and he did it extremely well. I just do not know what to think.

The entire segment on Iraq is pretty much shredding McCain and lauding Obama.

W.o.w.

5. Perhaps he sees McSame losing whatever credibility he had. If
Iraq thinks a withdrawal is a good idea, that blows McSame's reasoning out of the water. Oops!

6. Buchannan continues to amaze...
I'm on a couple of conservative emailing lists (spying on the enemy) and Pat Buchannan writes for one of them (Human Events) and I've been quite surprised by some of the stuff I've read from him. He must be going soft in his old age...

16. Paleoconservatives hate Neocons.
They are like oil and water. Two completely opposite sides of the conservative spectrum. Both are still batshit crazy though.

I think I can remember him being one of the few repukes who thought it was a terrible idea.

10. I once saw a democratic "strategist" on MSNBC against Buchanan
And for once, the democrat was actually half-way competent. Pat started ramming Obama on Iraq, and the Democratic strategist started hammering all of the things that PAT had said in opposition to the war back in his face. Pat looked very sheepish.

11. Paleo-conservatives like Buchanan don't like all these foreign adventures like Iraq.
They want to concentrate on keeping foreigners OUT of the U.S.

even considering getting out.

But yeah, finding myself agreeing with Buchanan makes my head hurt; I completely understand!

17. Pat's always been against the war
So think exactly what your gut is telling you to think. He's an asshole still, but he's not always wrong about EVERYTHING. He's a perfect example of the broken clock theory.

21. Maybe the beginnings of
a coalition of the lucid, if not entirely sane.

Cut the neocons out from the herd and run them into the ground. The neocons are the greatest threat to civilization in our time. I'm far from certain that the right wing of our own part aren't pretty much the same filth and in league with them.

26. If Obama wins you will see the rebuilding of certain bipartisan foreign policy and national
security perspectives that have lived from Truman until Bush, the neocons and Rove turned foreign policy, the use of the military, and war into an essential part of the never ending campaign.

20. That is a bit surprising, but Buchanan does sometimes make sense
I've read one of his books and while I agree with him on very few issues, I did find myself agreeing with him on some issues.

Surprising. He almost sounded like he liked the guy.

23. Whose War? Buchanan Not a Neocon
Back in 2003 when I was frantically looking for saner leadership, when even Hillary Clinton and Tom Daschle were supporting the war idea, I came across this article by Buchanan. I've kind of liked him ever since. I think that he's the old-fashioned conservative type that I was raised with. Not so bad.

A quote:
"Though we have said repeatedly that we admire much of what this president has done, he will not deserve re-election if he does not jettison the neoconservatives’ agenda of endless wars on the Islamic world that serve only the interests of a country other than the one he was elected to preserve and protect."
His words hold up well today.

24. Odd fellow, he.
Buchanan is terrible when it comes to domestic policy. He also is still invested in sticking up for Nixon. But he is often right on target on foreign issues. He has expressed concerns about how the US would leave Iraq if Obama is elected. But he knows that McCain would continbue the Cheney policy in the Middle East. That includes his concern that the OVP is advocating military strikes on targets inside of Iran.

Just because there's one subject that he's correct about doesn't make up for the countless other ones that he's wrong about.
