My Republican Senator is campaigning on Obama's coattails.
I can't decide whether I'm appalled or amused; whether it's an insult or a compliment to Obama. Maybe some of both.

I saw this ad on tv last night, and couldn't believe what I was actually seeing and hearing on my tv screen.

This morning, I tried to find the ad itself, and couldn't.

Here's a news clip that reports on the ad; for those of you who don't know, they got at least one thing wrong. Gordon Smith is not a "moderate" republican:

Here's an article from the Oregonian:

1. I do give Smith credit for voting repeatedly against the war. I assume
he got permission from the GOP leadership to do so, in order to help him in Oregon, but still--I'm sure he's gotten a nasty earful from his Repub constituents. It's never easy to buck the tide. That said, he and Obama have absolutely no connection--just shows what a sad state of affairs the GOP finds itself in.

3. In my case, he's helping Obama.
I've been persistently vocal about my doubts about Obama, and how much I don't like his republican-friendly rhetoric.

Even I know better than to think that Obama and Smith are working on the same goals.

I don't think this ad is going to help Smith. His panic is showing. We're going to replace him with Merkely in November.

I never thought Obama was electable. I'll gladly acknowledge my error. If the Republican Party is this desperate, they're already acknowledging that their case is hopeless.

2. Heh heh. Gordon Smith realizes the GOP "brand". . . "is in the trash"
As GOP congressman Tom Davis has said, "...if we were a dog food, they would take us off the shelf..."

7. Yeah, but people don't really know him
The ONLY time you hear about Smith is those times he's in opposition to Shrub. Hell, if they didn't put the R next to his name you wouldn't know it.

He plays the game well and has boatloads of $$, so we'll have to work that much harder...

9. Hi LWolf -- My docile husband screams at the TV whenever this ad comes up!
It's hysterical...

10. I almost never see campaign ads.
Literally.

Because I almost never have networks or cable news tuned in. I did last night, and what a shock!

13. You're not missing a thing. I'm doing radio -- jazz 89.1 and classical -- pretty much all day now.
Regrettably, they, too, have brief news breaks -- although with no commercials.

Thanks for your commentary.

11. If Oregonians know that Smith has been voting against the war ONLY to win another term...

.... Why are so many of them falling for it?

From what I can see.. the polls are close, but they still show Smith slightly ahead.

Why isn't Jeff Merkley ---> royally kicking Mr. Smith's ass?

As soon as the election is over -- if Smith wins -- the ugly thuglies will all be celebrating that the 'bait n switch' tactics they pulled actually worked.

I could possibly understand if they didn't have a great Democrat running ---- ---- but from everything I've heard, Jeff Merkely rocks.

So why is Smith even competetive?!? Any Oregonians know?

12. Good question.
It's early yet.

More donations for Merkely are indicated.

14. More attention will turn to this race after Labor Day. It always works that way.
We met Jeff Merkley at the Washington County Democratic fund raiser and silent auction this spring.

We'll be campaigning for him in late summer and early fall -- right up to Election Day.

Hoping for the best -- top down and bottom up on the Demcratic ticket.

Thanks for your comments.

15. That's what I figured.
Around here, I don't ever see any signs of campaigns until about 6 weeks before election day. I was surprised that Smith was hitting this early; another sign that he recognizes he's in trouble.

16. People are just struggling to live day to day. I don't see many election signs or bumper stickers.

If you're a political junkie, like my husband and myself, you can feel just "fried" with weeks and weeks of thinking and wrangling on this site and others!. Unlike elections prior to the Internet and cable television, these days things are being done at the speed of light (or sound, whatever)! I still don't know WHAT THE HECK JESSE JACKSON SAID that started such a firestorm. Also, the FISA votes were extremely confusing and I got slammed for not READING THROUGH THE LEGISLATION. Jeeze, Louise... I'm just trying to have a life besides politics!

We've been through hell for seven and a half years. Frankly, we're pooped out but still standing.

Hopefully, we'll get through this to the convention and the months until November.

Warm regards,

Radio Lady and Audio Al (two digital geezers!)
