Look people, Jesse Jackson was not making a public speech or statement
This was supposed to be a private conversation with the AA reporter. Lot's of blacks feel that Obama is talking down to them and are disappointed with some of his changes in position since winning the nomination. Just like lots of white folks on the left are disappointed for the same reason. It's like Obama USED the black voters to get the nomination and now he is dissing them to appeal to more whites. It does not matter what the reality is...that is the perception. Jesse Jackson sees this as a problem and fears that Obama may be turning off some of the black vote that he will need in November to win. More than anything, Jesse wants Obama to win. So stop trying to make this an ego trip by Jesse. Jesse has paid his dues more than most blacks, including Obama.

...on what the OP fells.

As a Black New Yorker, I'm not seeing this. In fact, I'm seeing and hearing A LOT OF VENOM towards our junior senator that could prove problematic come re-election time.

But hey, whaddoIknow?

Bruddaman Polling Inc. didn't call me or anyone I know, so maybe we're just not represented in the OP's “scientific” sampling.

And whatnot. :)

28. Not saying that she'd LOSE her seat, but...
...taking into account the state's demographics, (where close to 70% of the populace is clustered around the five boroughs and the immediate exurbs and is where the vast bulk of the Black voting populace lives), if a large enough, disillusioned clump opts to sit the next election out—a candidate with huge pull upstate and downstate recognition (say, a Rudy Giuliani) could make things very interesting by pushing hard for the ethnic White vote(as he did to unseat David Dinkins). Fences are in the process of being mended—but downstate Blacks in NY have long memories and could really bollix things up if things aren't done with sincerity and a little bit of butt-kissing to salve the wounds of rough words during the primaries from the Senator and her husband.

71. Ahem...
Caught up and rendered silly by Obamamania, Black progressives who should know better have unilaterally disarmed themselves in surrender to a media-amplified euphoria that most resembles a group drug fest. The faculties of memory and common sense shut down, as longtime activists effectively repudiate their former lives to join the mindless bacchanal swirling around Barack Obama's thoroughly corporate candidacy. We at BAR, who have consistently held Black politicians to the standards of the historical Black Political Consensus, find ourselves reviled by Black erstwhile progressives "based on annoyance that we brought a skunk to the party." But the stink does not emanate from us - it comes from Obama's own mouth, when he praises racist Ronald Reagan and the 1990s "ideas" of Newt Gingrich, in a blatant bid to make common cause with those who wish to destroy the last vestiges of a Black Movement, root and branch.

so, remind me, when was the last time JJ accomplished anything that did not benefit JJ first...

Barack may not be the black man JJ envisioned attaining the presidency...which may say volumes about JJ and his desire to be the leader of 'his people' as opposed to the leader of 'all the people'...

JJ, and he has done a great deal of good in his day, is nothing at all compared to his mentor...not the drive, not the dedication, not the strength...for him to say anything on or off the record dissing Obama reveals something about JJ and his ego...

JJ should apply his many talents to getting Obama elected...and leave it at that...

and I don't feel Obama has slighted us in any way.
I fully support the "tough love"-sort of advice he is giving to some of our black males. Its nothing new, really. Plenty of blacks have been saying the same thing -- just not so publicly.

Furthermore, Obama isn't just scoring hits and moving away. He pledges reforms in education and social programs that will improve outreach and oppportunities in this critical group.

But the desire to change and take personal responsibility in ones future MUST be there first. This cannot happen without concerned parents or equivalent community elders.

My ex husband was a black man, and came from a strong family who believed in personal responsibility, especially for the children, and to raise them to be responsible adults themselves. It's just good old fashioned, real family values. Something we as a culture could all strive to be better at.

Yes, Jessee Jackson has been at some of this country's most historical moments. However; either Jessee has gotten soft or he has forgotten...there are still real enemies and real threats to minorities, women and anyone outside the norm. Faux is amongst those threats....

Obama's statement about responsibility goes across races, he was speaking to all Americans.

Faux has proven again they have no integrity....what's new?

That's the same rationale that people use for McCain and his war record.

Your problem is you don't like Obama so anything that anyone says against him is excused. Pitiful.

It's true that Jessie has been there but Jessie has a lot of baggage. His hands are not clean.

Also, there were many people that came before Jessie. Before Jessie ran Shirley Chisolm ran.

Please try to understand the WHOLE history.

I know you don't want Jessie to cut his nuts off because you've been riding Obama's jock for a long time.

BHO carrying his Father's Day message (same as a year ago) to an AA church, not Trinity, about black men in general being better fathers is just butter on a shit sandwich.

I will support BHO. I think the black community needs to keep him as honest possible by taking any beefs with his statements or policy considerations to him directly. There is no reason to cut him slack because he shares a skin color. If his policy statements are contradictory to AA interests, I don't think we should hold back.

I'm convinced that speaking truth to power starts at home first. Jesse has done some suspect things. I don't like all of them, but I respect him enough to defer to his years in the trenches regardless of how unhappy he might make non AAs. I wouldn't dare say (as I've read the reverse on this board) that white voters like Obama better because Jesse is giving him crap (ie. I hate Jesse so I love Obama now-this is horrific).

that Obama is not a finger-pointing blamer when it comes to racial issues. Jesse used to be the real deal. Unfortunately he has devolved into a race pimp these past few decades.

Black politicians who do not rely on race as a crutch marginalize those who do.

57. Thing is, Obama made his comments to a black audience and recieved applause
Jesse Jackson is part of the old-guard civil rights leadership that doesn't like this jonny-come-lately Obama. His black parent isn't African American, he hasn't "paid his dues" in the civil rights struggle, and, most importantly, he didn't kiss their rings and ask their permission to run for president.

Problem for them is, black people love Obama. The same people they claim to represent are fired up about the candidate that they don't like. Thus, Jackson is essentially forced to support Obama, if he wants to maintain any credibilily with the constituency he claims to represent. I've always suspected that he still didn't care much for Obama privately, and these recent comments clearly prove that, and they indicate that he is indeed quite pissed at Obama.

65. I think what he said was gross, but he apologized and Obama accepted it
Once Obama accepted the apology, I decided to not worry about it anymore. Jackson is now publicly kissing Obama's butt to help smooth things over so I really don't know what more can be said or done.

66. Jesse took it personally and spoke inappropriately
He is one of those dead beat dads that Obama criticizes--if his mistress Karin Stanford can be believed.
It is never appropriate to use lynch language, even if one is African American.

68. I could care less what Jackson said in private to some reporter. No big thing.
I can't believe people who supposedly are working their asses off for our candidate have time to worry about stuff as petty as this.

The same would apply if this were reversed and Obama made a comment in private that was somehow recorded.

It's nothing.

70. You'd think after being caught calling New York hymie town by a hot mic, he'd be more careful.
It doesn't matter if it's private or not. How would we here on DU react if McCain had said it? Just because it's private does not make it any less offensive. Cheney telling Pat Leahy to fuck off was in private, but it didn't make it easier to accept.
