I find Jackson's comments offensive. |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 01:46 AM by Drunken Irishman
And would be offended had anyone else said them. This argument that we should ignore those comments because they weren't meant for the public is absurd. Cheney was off the record when he told Pat Leahy to fuck off, but it didn't make it any less appalling. The fact Jackson even contemplated saying what he said concerns me, because it isn't as if it was a sly or subtle remark. It was vulgar and offers a true glimpse into what Jackson really thinks of Sen. Obama.
You can spin it all you want, but his comment was out of line, especially when it's coming from a supposed supporter.

Cosby made his remarks, which were a lot more harsh than Obama's, most blacks DID agree with him. Why is Obama any different? I haven't heard any castigation from blacks so far (myself included) that actually disagreed with what he or Cosby had to say.

|
Yes, people need to take responsibility for their actions, but they are often victims of circumstances they have no control over (neglected schools, lack of jobs and housing, gargantuan drug penalties, etc.).
There are bigger, more responsible targets for Obama and Cosby to take aim at.

59. Obama HAS been discussing those other issues. |
|
He has been doing his entire life. This speech was specifically targeted at fathers because it was Father's Day. While Cosby has mentioned these other issues from time to time, his remarks were much harsher in tone. That's the issue I and a lot of black people had with him, even though may have agreed with the substance of what he was saying. And because he's a hypocrite, many people were put off by his harsh rhetoric.

Jackson is the one one who fathered a child with an assistant--a daughter whom he reportedly does not see or support, according to the mother Karin Stanford. Cosby may have had affairs, but unlike Jackson he is not a deadbeat dad.

If you've read Obama's books or listened to his speeches you will find that he has repeatedly said this. He is not the only person that has said this. It's amazing that some people think this is sa taboo subject in the Black community.
What makes Jackson's statement so wrong is that he has said the same thing. He has made speeches regarding fatherhood and personal responsibility for many years in front of many diverse audiences.

the most i get from the online reports is something about obama "talking down" to people of color now.
is that it? was that all? what is all of the fuss about?
i love the msm. they report on something they tell me is offensive, but they will never tell me exactly what was said so i can make up my own mind about how offensive the statement might be.
if you don't know, that's ok. i've looked around and i don't know either.

Jackson said he was going to cut his nuts off! The old man was pissed off and said something he couldn't back up, and ends up getting slapped down by his own kid! It is the classic event, and Jesse realized it is time to hand the baton over to the next generation.

How stupid is this guy? Why does he talk like this off camera? After an interview on Fox? Is he nuts? When he speaks on camera, he acts like the church lady. Then, off-camera, it's "hymietown" and "cut off his nuts." Can you say, two-faced?
Didn't Jackson also have a "love child" who he kept hidden until the right wingers outed him when he announced a march for black voting rights in Florida after the 2000 election?
As for helping Obama, I believe it was his son, Jesse Jackson, Jr., who was an early and strong supporter. Jesse, Sr., not so much.
I think what we have here is a sad case of professional jealousy.

but I read both Cosby's and Senator Obama's remarks differently. It was more than having children out of wedlock. It was stop having children you cannot afford to raise (which covers ALL races and religions). And if you can't afford the kids, keep your pants zipped (this goes for the women as well).

more condemning, scolding like a father, which is fine. Obama didn't come across as acerbic in his remarks but they did have some bite. Obama was speaker to a broader segment of the community, too. It was a "black" speech. He was speaking about ALL fathers who abandon their children but pointed out that the problem has become an epidemic in the black community in particular.

The guy is frustrated with some of Obama's positions but isn't publicly going to disagree with him. He got caught with a live mike and so it came out that he's pissed about one of Obama's positions. I think that's perfectly natural. No one is going to agree with their candidate 100% of the time.

To make Obama less scary to those white voters who think Jackson is a scary black man. Maybe if they think Obama pisses off Jesse Jackson, they'll think he can't be all bad.
The reason I'm thinking this way is that it all happened very quickly. Jackson apologized before most people even knew his original comments even happened.

This is really impressive manipulation of "independent" and right wing voters, plus the MSM.
Do you all really think that Jesse Jackson would honestly talk about castrating another black man at a Fox News station?
My Republican father, who now regularly makes phone calls for Obama, always uses Jackson as an example of how "different" Obama is, e.g. "he's not Jesse Jackson."
This will "play" well for Obama, draw the line between him and Jackson. I believe that Jackson took a hit for Obama here.
