McCain avoids Viagra question

Posted: 10:45 AM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

(CNN) – John McCain is known for his frequent chats with reporters and his willingness to discuss nearly any issue.

But at least one is off-limits, the Republican presidential nominee suggested Wednesday: Viagra.

"I certainly do not want to discuss that issue," the Arizona senator said aboard his "Straight Talk Express" bus in Ohio, according to the Associated Press.

But the off-message topic was raised from a member of McCain’s own team: national co-chairwoman Carly Fiorina, who had said earlier women often express frustration over the fact many health insurance plans cover Viagra but not birth control medication.

"Let me give you a real, live example, which I've been hearing a lot about from women. There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth control medication. Those women would like a choice," she said Monday.

1. That's a real issue
that McSame needs to address. Perhaps he thought they were asking about his personal use of the product......

5. WTF? So women's issues are off the table?
Excuse me, jackass, but where the hell do you get off? I hope the Clintonites who are now voting McCain are watching and getting a clue.

6. I don't think John has a particularly "enlightened" view of womens' issues.
Or the importance of birth control.

Quite the opposite, I'd say.

8. Good for him!
His sexual life is no one's business. Same with Obama.

White the parity question is legitimate, making it personal is not. What, will someone ask the Obamas how often they do it, or what kind of birth control methods they use? Or how many partners they had before they got married?

Not his use of Viagra

At a breakfast with reporters, Fiorina suggested that individuals-and women in particular-be given more flexibility to determine what their health insurance plans should cover. "There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth-control medication. Those women would like a choice," she observed.

When McCain was asked for his position on the issue, he said--with a nervous laugh-"I certainly do not want to discuss that issue."

The reporter pressed. "But apparently you've voted against--"

"I don't know what I voted," McCain said.

The reporter explained that McCain voted against a bill in 2003 that would have required health insurance companies to cover prescription birth control. "Is that still your position?" she persisted.

During the awkward exchange, with several lengthy pauses, McCain said he had no immediate knowledge of the vote. "I've cast thousands of votes in the Senate," McCain said, then continued: "I will respond to--it's a, it's a..."

The question (thankfully) isn't about whether he uses it but if he supports the disparity in coverage - men get ED meds but women can't get birth control covered by insurance.

This has long been an issue and, forgive me for being clueless, I thought it was resolved long ago.

How pathetic that it hasn't been.

15. You're right - it was about the disparity in coverage
but I think McCain thought they were asking about whether or not he used the stuff.

16. Can someone remind him that he's running for President?
I know it's more fun to take weekends off and pick and choose the issues he would prefer to discuss, but Presidents don't have that luxury. Therefore, candidates running for President don't have that luxury either.

17. This is surprising since
I'd think McCain would be hoping we will ALL "take the blue pill" and vote him in to continue our lives of blissful ignorance and easily accessible erections while our country is flushed down the rabbit hole.
