President Obama: Who will he nominate as next Justice of SCOTUS? |
|
Many candidates but I think that New York's Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be a good choice and would allow Senator Hillary Clinton to be her sponsor to the US Senate for confirmation. WHo do you think would also be a good Justice?

1. I'm trying not to think that far ahead |
|
I'm just concentrating on getting Obama elected and sworn in as president first. If we don't succeed at that, all our speculations about who he'll nominate will be moot.

2. From a purely Machiavellian standpoint |

I'd nominate Hillary if there were enough Senate votes to confirm her. It eliminates any possibility of her staging a 2012 party uprising and puts her in a position where she could actually do a lot of good.

3. I think that Hillary would rather stay in the Senate for now |
|
and move to the Supreme Court during Obama's 2nd term (if and when he is elected President)

6. Well, Bill Clinton gave us Ruth Bader Ginsburg. |
|
She was an attorney working very closely with the ACLU's Women's Rights Project. And thank god for her!

7. I would recommend Barry Scheck |

I would have said Alan Dershowitz, but he's getting up there in age. We need somebody who has experience in criminal defense. It has been quite some time that we had anybody from a criminal law background. Given the number of cases involving criminal prosecutions that go before the Supreme Court, I think we would benefit from someone with that experience.
If Obama gets multiple chances to appoint justices, I think he should try to build a dream team of intellectual elites, people with long, distinguised careers on the bench or in academia, rather than appointing political favorites or people with no history--i.e. "skeletons in the closet".

10. Hillary Clinton would be my choice |

I'd announce it now, saying that, if elected, she would be his first choice. That would satisfy the HRC crowd, she is a hard worker and smart as all get out, and it would keep Bill Clinton from getting too close to the White House ever again.
