McCain's Arizona Woes Continue-New Poll Shows Obama Up by Three Points in McCain's Home State
McCain's Arizona Woes Continue
New Poll Shows Obama Up by Three Points in McCain's Home State

By John Dougherty 07/10/2008

PHOENIX -- In a sign of continued weakness in his home state, an online poll shows Sen. John McCain trailing Sen. Barack Obama by 3-percentage points in Arizona. The poll also shows the candidacy of Liberterian Bob Barr is having a significant impact on McCain's campaign by siphoning off conservative voters nationwide.

The Arizona poll was part of nationwide Zogby International poll that put Obama ahead in total electoral votes with 273 to 160 for McCain. The poll found 11 states with 105 electoral votes too close to call -- including Arizona. McCain’s campaign in June included Arizona among its list of swing states.

McCain not only faced problems with Independent voters, he is losing a small, but potentially lethal voting block of the GOP right to Barr. The former Republican congressman from Georgia is pulling just enough voters in many states to shift the balance to Obama. Whether this bloc will remain in Barr's camp on election day could determine the outcome.

“Barr is hurting McCain all across the country,” said Fritz Wenzel, director of communications for Zogby.

3. I doubt if Barr's actual votes will match his polling.
But if he forces McCain to spend money in ARIZONA, godspeed to him.

5. He dropped considerable dough here in the primaries.
Yes, he had to convince ARIZONA Republicans to vote for him with targeted TV ads for Arizonans.

When I saw the first one, my jaw hit the floor. There were several after that.

9. McCain only polled 49% in the Republican primaries
there was a bitter fight in the Republican party that resulted in McCain going in and ousting precinct and county chairpersons in a bitter fight.

Barr could surprise people in AZ

7. I'm telling you people - Arizonans are not that happy with McCain.
People are always writing into the editorial page complaining (whining :P) about how McCain doesn't go to work. I heard yesterday that McCain has now missed more days than Tim Johnson (SD) who was out for a delibating illness (enlarged blood vessels in the brain).

And as I posted earlier in the week, we were in a rural, retiree small town over the 4th and there was an Obama for President headqtrs right in the middle of town. Nada for McCain.

C'mon Obama - bring it to Arizona!

21. As an Arizonan, I am PSYCHED about this!
I think it's not a given, but a great possibility, that we can turn AZ blue this year. McCain hardly does anything for the people of Arizona (I hear he hasn't been to my area since 1997!), so I hardly think we owe him anything just because he supposedly "represents" our state. I plan to volunteer and do whatever I can to help AZ go Obama come November! :D

13. This leads us to the question that the MSM should be asking

Who can John McCain put on the ticket to help him win Arizona

Should this ever be uttered in the MSM I will have considered my life's mission to have been fulfilled lol

14. Ha! The m$m hasn't dared breathe a word about his lousy polling
in his own state. That question would be a dream come true. They'd be acknowledging he's toast!

19. Results I've seen vary widely here, but it's going to be close.
We have some pretty heated downticket races--mostly Maricopa Cty (Phoenix area) sheriff; a LOT of people want Arpaio gone and will come out to vote just for that reason.

Admittedly our major paper is pretty RW and slant toward McS, but ASU's polls have a much closer race.

The Hispanic community is always very good with GOTV efforts and that will help Obama because the community will come out for downticket races (thank goodness; they do this AZ progressive's heart proud!)!

We have more registered Independents than either party, too, and so many voters who don't know McSame any more than Obama that that could really help out (that is due to our rapidly changing demographic).
