A Nation of Whiners?
A Nation of Whiners?
Posted by Robert Zimmer on 07.10.2008

John McCain's repulsive economic advisor, sloth-like Texan Phil Gramm, declares the recession "mental," while his own economic record borders on the criminal.

John McCain's campaign keeps digging its own grave, which isn't saying much given McCain never looks far from that state even on a good day. Phil Gramm, economic advisor to the McCain campaign, made headlines on July 10 by declaring the current dismal state of the economy "a mental recession" and that America is a "nation of whiners." Gramm, a former Republican senator from Texas, joins the ranks of clueless right-wing nutcases who seem either unwilling or unable to understand that the nation is in a very real recession. 3.5 million manufacturing jobs have been lost during the Bush Administration; the dollar has lost half its value vs. the Euro; oil prices set new records each day and gas prices could hit $5 a gallon before summer's end; 1.3 million homes were subject to foreclosure in the past year; 48 million Americans are without health insurance. The list goes on.

Like most country-club Republicans, Gramm cannot see beyond his own personal wealth, which – unsurprisingly – has largely been gained at the expense of the poor and middle class. After leaving the Senate in December 2002, Gramm became a lobbyist for and Vice Chairman of UBS Investment Services, one of the most notorious offenders in creating the subprime mortgage lending crisis. In the past year alone, UBS has written off $18 billion – yes, that's billion – in losses related to subprime mortgage and other risky speculative activities. In the last year alone, UBS has lost 70 percent of its stock value, taking UBS' value to a level not seen since – you guessed it – before Gramm joined UBS in 2002. The icing on the cake is that Gramm and three other lobbyists pocketed $750,000 in 2005 and 2006 alone for their efforts in lobbying Congress to relax lending state lending laws preventing predatory mortgage lending tactics. Gramm did not step down as a lobbyist for UBS until April 18, 2008. It's little wonder, then, that Gramm thinks the recession is purely mental and that the rest of us are whiners. After all, most of us have never had the presence of mind to simultaneously rape and plunder low-income homeowners and drive a major bank into the ground in order to become filthy rich.

8. *Chuckle*...cut him loose...*chuckle*
This is the exact kind of thing a flooded out midwest will not take kindly too.

I feel a nice commercial coming on. McCain has said really similar stuff before. It can be tied together nicely. I think we can easily sell the "mental recession" as being the actual centerpiece of McSame's economic policy.

The Republicans are hell bent on destroying their brand. We should enthusiastically support their efforts. We need to hit them hard and relentlessly. They must always be on the defensive. It's time to pounce...hard.

9. This is great writing..
hard hitting, straight to the point, memorable passages..

TurtleHead Phil needs to have the entire village Tar and Feather that Fuck and run his ass out of town on a Rail.. He a goddamn Corporate TRAITOR to the United States and we need to start throwing monsters like this into Ass Pounding Prisons in places Like Detroit, then tell the other prisoners he's a child molester - I've SEEN what rapists and murders do to those kind..

He'd be in good company, as the writer espouses, Gramm's a rapist, who has brutalized our country for the last time once exposed..

But, I'm willing to think that McCain is stupid enough to actually consider Gramm as Veep, or Gramm will choose himself, like Cheney.. So you'd effectively have a CHEAPER and more tawdry version of Bush and Cheney all over again..

Anyone wanna bet? All I've got left is Monopoly money unfortunately :)
