Unintentional MVP of the Obama campaign this week: It's a tie!
Jesse Jackson and Phil Gramm!

Jesse:

In a moment of unexpected candor, Jesse admitted his disdain for Barack Obama's talking about the responsibilities of fatherhood to black audiences. This accomplished the following positive effects for the Obama campaign:

A. Obama's call for fathers to step up and meet their responsibilities gets a wider play in the media. This is an enormously popular narrative among women especially, and it is a positive message in general. Nobody ever lost votes by calling for men to be better fathers.

B. The FISA vote had to share the headlines with the Jackson flap instead of dominating the headlines.

C. In general, since Jackson has been in the public eye, Democratic politicians in national races have their prospects for victory go up proportional to the distance they are from Jesse Jackson. Bill Clinton won in 1992 largely because of his ability to ease white folks' minds that he was not beholden to Jesse. The farther a Democrat can distance himself from Jesse, the better.

Phil Gramm:

Called Americans "whiners" and said that we are in a "mental recession". Then fully stood by his remarks when given the opportunity to clarify.

Obama took a hit for calling middle class Americans "bitter" and "clinging". How do you think middle America feels about being called "whiners" and being told that their economic hardships are all "in their head"?

What a gift to the Obama campaign, Phil. Thanks a bunch.

So... a toast to two jackasses who, through their inability to keep their mouth shut, immensely helped our candidate.

Kudos!

4. I actually enjoyed watching the news this week! Schuster subbed for Abrams
last night and the "poor" Republican strategist hack they had on looked like she was going to cry at one point!

I'm a sadist, I guess.
