John Edwards Continues His Anti-Poverty Tour

Edwards pushes for minimum wage hike in NJ

Published on Friday, July 11, 2008

The Associated Press
TRENTON, N.J.

Former presidential candidate John Edwards says raising the minimum wage is a key component to cutting poverty in America by 50 percent within a decade.

Speaking in Newark as part of a multi-city tour, the former North Carolina senator urged New Jersey lawmakers to raise the state's current hourly rate from $7.15 to $8.50 an hour. He says the move could help lift thousands of working poor into the middle class.

Opponents of the proposed increase say it's too costly, especially for small business owners.

1. Reality is, it isn't.. if more people have more money in their pockets..they
will go and use that small business... but if you don't have money, you get the basics and small business gets screwed.

2. The opponents don't care about small business owners. They care about
big corporations' payrolls. That's another RW argument that has no basis in facts. If they were so concerned about small business owners, there would be laws that would give small business owners safety nets, and the ability to compete with the huge corporations who can undermine and undersell them because of the various breaks they get in acquiring products wholesale, in the special banking accommodations they get, lower insurance and many other things that make it hard for small businesses to compete with large corporations.

3. GOP speak: Small business owners=Big corporations
The democratic party is the party for small business, the GOP is the party of big business (and special interests.)
