http://www.barackobama.com/index.phpI actually signed up first, but it looks like one can click on the "Volunteer" radio button in the RH column. You register on the next page and answer questions about previous experience, interests, etc.
ALSO, look for DU under groups - some of the DUers joined the DU group - I sent Skinner an e-mail 2 weeks ago asking that he make the DUers aware that there is a DU group on Obama's website, but so far, nada.
Good luck!
After the organizational meeting yesterday we divided into groups of about 4 people and went to different parts of town, e.g., shopping centers, grocery stores, etc. As ppl approached to enter stores, we said, "Hello. Are you registered to vote?" and went from there. Our little group also moved to one of the projects - my personal focus in this campaign is African Americans because there is so much MISinformation floating around about access to personal data if one registers to vote. The REALLY big misinformation is this: In North Carolina, after a convicted felon has completed probation, s/he is eligible to vote. We didn't register that many voters yesterday, but I did register one young black couple in the projects. She was really interested in registering, he was reluctant, and I asked why. He paused, and I said, "If you or any of your friends have been convicted of a felony and have completed your probation, in North Carolina you are eligible to vote." His face lit up and he got so excited! He, indeed, was a convicted felon (a label that is too good for our elected "leaders" IMHO)and was excited to register. We had a document from our State Board of Elections that described a voter's rights in the state of NC, and he read it, front and back. Wanted to keep it, but it was the only one we had. So, I WILL download that document to distribute at future voter registrations. Signing up that one young black couple MADE my day. Anyone who is mislead about their civil rights only pumps me up that much more.
I already had contacted our State Board of Elections concerning how precincts are to be set up, and they obliged with diagrams and all sorts of useful information. One of the "Obama girls" asked me to e-mail to her that information. One thing that really surprised me yesterday is that Alamance County (NC) is one of the top 5 counties in the entire country being really targeted by O's campaign--I guess because NC is a swing state and Alamance County is so RED.
This O campaign machine is AMAZING! After we register voters, the forms are copied before being given to the local board of elections for entering into the system. O's campaign has representatives AT the local board of elections to make sure that the data is getting entered and, if a form gets laid to the side because the registrar "cannot read it", the O staffer picks up the form and calls the registrant on the spot and clarifies whatever the issue is. I can just about bet that they will followup with the registrants to ensure that they receive their voter registration cards in the mail. I am loving being involved at the grassroots level of such a dynamic, history-making campaign!
Good luck with your efforts! Keep me posted! :)
