Hard to insult Michelle Obama for being an "elitist" when she wears a $60 Gap dress...
Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 10:18 PM by Maddy McCall
to an Independence Day parade.

She could have worn anything. Designers are salivating to dress her. But she picked a dress off the racks at a Gap store. And I think the dress is lovely. If I ever wore dresses (I'm a jeans type woman), I'd already have bought that dress. It's simple, inexpensive, and she looks great in it.

I think her quotation about the earrings was a minor gaffe...we don't want to make gaffes like this when we're nailing McCain and his surrogates for the same thing...but I don't think that she said that she intended to spend her $600 on earrings...my guess is that she won't even be in the income category to receive a "stimulus" check.

I'm posting this for my friend, Elrond Hubbard, who keeps me grounded from time to time, and I hope he says the same thing about me. (And I'm gonna be major embarassed if he doesn't show up in this thread. :D )

1. You make an excellent point, and thank you for this OP.
I really appreciate it. :hi:
The attempts by McCain to paint Obama as an elitist are just about the most laughably pathetic thing I've ever seen. THIS from an idiot who doesn't know much about the economy, doesn't know the price of gas, and doesn't seem to care that people are bothered by it.
UGH.

rewriting definitons of words a la 1984 - been going on for a while now.
and i'm sad to see that some on the left are guilty of this as well - critics of O that are filthy rich and come from money older than the hills accusing Him of being elitist.

Probably overloaded from everyone buying Michelle's dress! :D

but it's an observation I'm sure that many others have made.

:toast:

What I like about Michelle is that she has potential to be a real role model for women and girls, about frugality in fashion.

I don't think that she's trying to do that...but just like huge Hummers are now seen as a passe extravagance and quite out of style, Michelle has the spotlight to do the same to extravagant, costly, ostentatious women's fashion.

39. Call it multi tasking.
Women can be many things, and yes,
all at once.

Michelle Obama is a mother and a wife,
and was until recently a working woman.
She is interested in a variety of things,
and it appears that fashion is one of them.

This thread does not reduce Michelle Obama
to anything less than what she is.
She is not being diminished here,
and I'm not sure how you have concluded
that she was.

Please enlighten us on your reasoning.
I'm sure many women who are also multifaceted
are dying to know.

A Confession

Once in a while,

And I think,

It's a big surprise.

—May 16, 2001, interview with the New York Times

Happenings

You're going to be told lots of things.
You get told things every day that don't happen.

It doesn't seem to bother people, they don't—
It's printed in the press.
The world thinks all these things happen.
They never happened.

Everyone's so eager to get the story
Before in fact the story's there
That the world is constantly being fed
Things that haven't happened.

All I can tell you is,
It hasn't happened.
It's going to happen.

31. Apparently it is not difficult for supporters of John SIdney McCain III to call others elitist
Son & Grandson of Admirals, husband of heiress, John Sidney McCain III seems to have no trouble calling others elitist. JSM III's simple, regular friends, who earn millions on TV, have been willing to call the Obamas elitist many times already.

LYING ISN"T DIFFICULT FOR THEM.

40. Did you actually read the entire quote.. or listen to M$M on the her spending
$600.00 on earings.. I think what she said was appropriate.. She started by stating the $600.00 would help pay down a bill, help with little odds and ends, or to buy a nice pair of earings to make one's self feel better, but its minor.. the check is just a mirage to appear like something was done.. what happens when that $600.00 is gone (which its not much anyways) and your back to record high gas, jobs and pay in decline, and every price increasing in everyday necessities.. I don't think it was a gaffe.. I think Cindy McCain spending almost a million dollars in a month is a gaffe.

41. Only my 2 wedding dresses cost that much.
Neither were traditional wedding dresses, or they would have cost more. One cost $50, in 1977. One cost $67, in 1991.

The 4 dresses and 3 skirts currently in my closet all cost $30 or less.

Not that I consider a $60 dress to be "elite;" I don't.

There IS a pretty hefty segment of the population that would consider $60 for a dress to be beyond their means, though.

52. This is how it always is
Democrats are elitist because we get Tom Cruise and Madonna and they have a private jet, but Lee Raymond and Ken Lay are "regular guys" because they like BBQ and I saw him wearing a cowboy hat once. We need to have some kind of draft so that we know who's side everyone is on and we have to accept blame or credit when they do something. We cold draft Tiger Woods and everyone would have to accept that Democrats are good at golf - no exceptions. Repugs could draft Mike Tyson and people would know to watch out for Republicans because they'll threaten your children in a nonsensical fashion and bite your ear off.
