*Breaking: Tony Snow dead at age 53
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 07:09 AM by npincus
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/07/breaking-news-t.html

After a long, candid and public battle with colon cancer, former White House press secretary and radio talk-show host Tony Snow died early this morning.

Immediate details were sketchy. But the news bulletin moved shortly after 7 a.m. Eastern time. Snow was 53.

He previously served as chief speechwriter for President George H.W. Bush and as a frequent host on the Fox News Channel on Fox News Sunday, Weekend Live and The O'Reilly Factor.

He also guest-hosted for Rush Limbaugh and had his own radio talk-show.

Last September after 17 months in the White House job Snow retired as President George W. Bush's third press secretary, saying with his cancer he needed to earn more for his family than the job's $168,000 salary. He was succeeded by Dana Perino.

Popular and inevitably cheerful, even during his draining chemotherapy treatments, Snow was well-liked among the White House press corps and with the smooth practice of a broadcaster seemed to genuinely enjoy the public sparring with media and explaining his boss's positions.

2. So another GOP mouthpiece is gone.
Will he be eulogized for days and days and days while the real news gets ignored?

I am sorry for his family, who loved him and who will miss him greatly.

3. I agree.
I know what kind of horror it is to see someone die of cancer, and I feel great sympathy for his family.

But I will say that I am tired of the media's excessive eulogizing.

6. Is that necessary?
Tony Snow wasn't a racist, as far as I know. Just an ordinary conservative doing his job as press secretary. If we're to spit on his grave, we might as well spit on the graves of anyone who works for other harmful organizations, like Goldman Sachs.

So I guess I'd better be careful posting my lack of sympthy for the loss of a shill for this criminal administration, both as a Fox cheerleader and a lying press secretary.

42. unfortunately Mr. Snow and the administration he supported helped keep us in the "dark ages"
by being against stem cell research and greater funding for cancer research. Tragic.

43. Not an idiot.
Just willing to play one on TV, and did his best to treat us like idiots and to turn us into idiots. Dead idiots, lest we forget.

The saddest part, I think, is that he (presumably) didn't repent before his passing. The evils he helped to sell us are not going to be revealed in his tell-all.

38. We should have conquered cancer years ago...we did it w/polio,
we did it w/many other diseases.

My condolences to his family.

Politics aside, he seemed to be a nice guy; and regardless, the loss of one diminishes us all to an extent.

39. I feel bad for his family, he's got small children...
no matter what we thought of his politics and his relationship to bush, he was a daddie, a friend, a husband and so many other things besides being a mouthpiece for the republicans.

may he rest in peace and may his family find strength to deal with this horrible time for them.

41. Have to admit I'm a little shocked.
Obviously I knew he was ultimately terminal, but I saw him on TMZ just yesterday, he was signing autographs or something. He appeared healthier than he did when he was at the White House, so I thought maybe he was going to stick around a while.

Can't say I liked the guy, but I wouldn't wish cancer on anybody. It's a horrible way to go :evilfrown:
