Bernie Mac Joke Bombs at Obama Event
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 08:44 AM by Truth Hurts A Lot
Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago, the 50-year-old star of "The Bernie Mac Show" joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language.

"My little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?'" Mac said. "I said, I don't know, but I said, 'Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000.'"

As the joke continued, the punchline evoked an angry response from at least one person in the audience, who said it was offensive to women.

"It's not funny. Let's get Barack on," a man shouted from the crowd, which paid $2,300 each to support the Illinois senator.

About 15 minutes later, Obama tried to smooth things over with a joke of his own.

"We can't afford to be divided by race. We can't afford to be divided by region or by class and we can't afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you've got to clean up your act next time," Obama said. "This is a family affair. By the way, I'm just messing with you, man."

1. this is the risk of having comedians appear at fundraisers I guess.
That being said, I would think that they would have "better" things to report on than this...this is from the AP story on it-

"The incident drew response from Obama's campaign, which criticized Mac for his choice of material.

"Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate," spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement after the event."

Also, this

"Mac's appearance was Obama's first celebrity event of the evening. Later at a Lincoln Park nightclub, Obama spoke to a raucous crowd of music fans, who paid up to $500 per person to see a performance by Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, and two other band members.

"Before these guys go, I want them to know that I had heard a rumor that they had suggested that I had nothing by them on my iPod," Obama said. "That is not true. I love Wilco."

This makes me feel sad, because I went to a Wilco concert right before the 2004 elections, and Jeff Tweety was telling us that we didn't have to be scared anymore and that we shouldn't change our lives because of one terrorist attack, before their cover of "Be not so fearful". I bought a recording of the concert and I remember listening to it when Bush won and being so pissed, lol.

2. bush never won....
i doubt the boor even won texas govenorship way back in the early days of 'fortunate son'. The revelations that the powers that be in USA used Youngster bush to front the looting of the economy, the cashing in accrued equity by all sorts of sneaky tricks which used false prosperity to deflect att'n from what the bastards were really doing ie STEALING, like thieves setting fireworks off out front so they could haul the safe out the back door. And having a legal imbecile in charge was necessary. Read 'Up from Conservativism' by Lind, or 'Blinded by the right' by Brock, or a hundred other books which map out the 'stategy' the rightwing used to defraud the gullible mob whose greed, racism and selfishness made them a critical element in the DEFRAUDING OF AMERICA BY RIGHTWING ACTIVISTS....bush has never won an election, because the majority of any electorate would have smelled the truth- so as long ago as 1980 the rightwing began messing criminally with the polls, which by 2001 needed a 911 disaster to buy time as the fraud was so blatant. So please always qualify 'bush won' by mentioning the fraud which was/is inherent in any rightwing victory....

7. That Was A Variation Of A Joke Winston Churchill Told A Long Time Ago...
I kind of feel sorry for people who don't have a sense of humor.

The Churchill joke (roughly);

Dealing with a woman who was being a snob at a party he asked her if she would sleep with him for a million pounds. After thinking about it she said she supposed she would. Then he asked her if she would sleep with him for one pound she said, "Heavens no! What kind of woman do you think I am?", to which he replied, "We've already established that, now we're haggling over a price."

11. Bernie Mac told a joke ...

Wow. Just wow.

I'm shocked, stunned, flabbergasted even.

I do believe I may have the vapors.

Meanwhile, in other news, McCain still hasn't gotten rid of Phil Gramm who called us all a bunch of whiners for claiming the economy is in the toilet and who is not, btw, a professional comedian.
