Ah, I'm going to have to go ahead and say no thanks. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel used to be chairman of ES&S. He became Senator based on votes counted by ES&S machines.http://www.motherjones.com/commentary/columns/2004/03/03_200.htmlhttp://www.onlinejournal.com/evoting/031004Fitrakis/031004fitrakis.htmlRepublican Senator Chuck Hagel, long-connected with the Bush family, was recently caught lying about his ownership of ES&S by the Senate Ethics Committee.http://www.onlisareinsradar.com/archives/000896.phpSenator Chuck Hagel was on a short list of George W. Bush's vice-presidential candidates. http://www.businessweek.com/2000/00_28/b3689130.htm

4. Hagel ain't going to be VP. The idea is being floated by the Obama campaign to show him as open. |

11. The more I think of it... Hagel for Sec of State or Sec of Defense would be much better |
|
He'd be VERY well-suited for those roles, and his social conservativism would have no bearing whatsoever on his duties in those roles.

12. I see Obama picking a VP that's closely aligned with his values and morals. |

Not one that necessarily agrees with him on every issue or has the same political strengths as he does - but these are very different things. I think he'll look for someone that he can "agree to disagree with" and who he can respect no matter how much their opinions vary. I also think he'll look for someone with a different background than him - quite possibly a military background which Hagel has, but so do others that would make a better match for Obama.
As someone upthread pointed out, it's a good unifying move to consider him - and I don't think it's just posing, I think Obama genuinely did want to put any possible Republicans on the list. I'm all for ending the polarizing party lines that have been drawn - but as you pointed out, we don't want to go TOO far with that. There's uniting the country and there's being stupid - and I think choosing Hagel would be the second. And that's why I doubt Obama would actually select him. He may wind up in the Obama administration though.

in Obama's administration, but not for putting him a heartbeat away from the presidency. That's something bad waiting to happen Obama can do without.

16. he's symbolic of the realignment of parties but that's as close as I want him |
|
His trip with Obama to Iraq is a slap in the face to McBush and, of course, I'm all for that ;), but putting him in a heartbeat from the presidency is just nuts.
