6. Boy that must be difficult -- just going to a movie.
Do they have to clear the theater? And if not, wouldn't most people just be looking at the Obamas rather than at the screen?

It's so sad they have to lose their privacy and 'normalcy'.

Hope they have a good time!

18. He's got two phones, one is his hand and one on his side.
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 07:34 PM by Skip Intro

A Razr and I don't know what on his side.

And it does make me shake my head, but this isn't a rant about Obama, tho you gotta wonder if the razr is there to make him look "cool." I am just repulsed by the faddish, rediculous. over the shark bs state of the industry, and the whole craze of cell phones and texting and pic messaging and ringbacktones and data devices and blackberrys and iphones and the latest, super greateast, stereo-bluetooth, gps, cannot live without it crap that seems to drive so many to get so wrapped up in what is a damn phone.

I'll relate this little bit, I manage a cell phone store. Been in the industry for a while. Loved it and made lots of money in the begining, and now mainly deal with complaints about ringtone limitations or the phone not being available in a "liquorice" color.

OMFG! It's a PHONE! Get a fucking life! You know?

Like I said, not a rant about Obama, a rant about some silly shit I see on a daily basis.

I'm gonna keep going, sorry.

I had this dude that works for the same company over for poker a couple weekends ago and he has two cell phones. Right out there, on the table, during the game. And he's exchanging text messages with someone, and every now and then we hear the ohsocool message alert going off. This goes on for a few, and then the other phone rings, some realtone of some song that made the fact that he had that ring tone sooooo cool. And while he's on one phone texting, and the other talking, it became apparent to everyone at the table that he was talking to the person he was also simultaneously texting. My head wanted to explode.

Ok, I'm done. Sorry for the rant, it just came out. But why two cell phones?

20. Hehe!

Seriously, though, I was struck by the phone and the attempt at casual/cool going on. Maybe a bit too much. I don't say that to pick on Obama, but because I remember the grief Gore got for the whole "earth tone clothing" thing.

But I'm also thinking, this is about McCain. McCain joked about not needing to email on his phone, and picking on his staffers for their Blackberries. So here's Obama, on a "day off," dressing like a modern yuppie on a weekend and visibly displaying two cellphones--one in hand, one in holster, taking advantage of his free time to see a movie at the head of his entourage. He looks like a laid back entrepeneur type, and all that makes McCain look older, less current, and less modern.

Reminds me of Kennedy playing football on the beach.

8. Wall-E?, Hellboy?, Journey to the Center of the Earth? . . . P.S.
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 03:58 PM by patrice
With all respect, Just helping out here: The preposition "with" takes pronouns in the Objective case, i.e. "... with him and his family ...." "He" is Subjective case, suitable only as the doer of some action or with a linking verb (is or was).

P.P.S. A good way to test which case your pronoun should be is to drop the second part of what follows the preposition, e.g. " ... with he as he leaves the East Bank Club Saturday..." doesn't sound right does it? BUT "... with him as he leaves the East Bank Club Saturday..." does sound right.

11. I am worried about further deterioration in the LOGIC of our language.
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 04:24 PM by patrice
People don't think there IS any logic to it, so they give up on the Grammar. Can you imagine how much confusion this creates and MUST cost us in $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ all of the time, especially with non-native speakers who are trying to figure out what the hell "we" mean?

Not to mention how JARRING it is to listen to all of the improper pronoun case (and misplaced modifiers) IN THE MEDIA ALL OF THE TIME.

22. You mean you don't enjoy hearing people say
"in lieu of" when they mean "in view of"? :)

Or, how about "on behalf of" when they mean "on the part of"? I'm hearing that one on liberal talk radio lately, and it makes me shudder.

Gah.

14. Thanks, patrice.
So many people make this mistake because of the objective case pronoun fear -- we all remember the kids saying things like, "Me and Melanie went to the movies ..." and go into contortions to avoid it. Your suggestion of a proof is just the thing.

15. He is such a string bean it is weird to see him in casual clothes. A suit
hides his skinnyness much better so it is a shock to really see how tall and thin he is.

19. He's lost weight
His hair is going grey too.

If he wins and serves two terms he'll have white hair in 2016 which might turn back to black by 2020. Campaigning and being President ages people.
