'New Yorker' cover angers Obama campaign
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/New_Yorker_cover_angers_Obama_supporters_0713.html

Published: Sunday July 13, 2008

On the cover of the upcoming New Yorker: Satirical portrayal of Obama through the eyes of his opposition, or McCain recruitment poster?

Senator Obama shrugged and said he had "no response" when asked about the cover on Sunday by CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic. The Obama campaign, on introspection, was more decisive on the issue; it might have appreciated the humor, if not for the delivery.

The cover art, depicting Senator Obama in a turban, while wife Michelle, packing an assault rifle, shares a "fist bump" with him, is described by the New Yorker as artist's Barry Blitt's lampooning of "scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign."

8. They of all outfits should know better than to go with "it's just a joke"...
No matter how true it is.

10. It will sell issues

for the all the wrong reasons. Since their readership trends liberal...it will also cost subscribers.

3. I understand what they were trying to do, but they blew it
That cover will be all over conservative websites. Only difference is that they will actually take the message seriously.

4. Pretty disgusting
even if its satire. Somehow I see rethugs making T-shirts out of it. I notice the American Flag in the fireplace. That was a cute touch. Michelle with an Afro didn't have any racial overturns even though I've never seen a picture with her with that particular hairstyle.

5. new yorker's obsolete - but for Seymour Hersh
Seymour Hersh's articles can be gotten without wading through the dank Upper West Side mausoleum that is the NYer.

6. This Will Help

Anyone who actually sees this and knows what the New Yorker is will get the satire and possibly be influenced by it - - if they don't already agree.

7. Everybody enjoy this replayed endlessly on Faux News. Dismiss it at your peril.
If anybody who posts here at DU thinks that satire is going to be recognized as such by the same folks who vote against their self interests just so gays can't "do it," guess again.

This will be used and re-used again and again against Obama. Wanna hear it?

SEAN HANNITY: Coming up next, one of the most liberal magazines in the nation - from New York, no less - speculates on Barack and Michelle Obama's Muslim and terrorist ties. Is it satire, or is there some truth behind it? We report, you decide.

9. Those damn smear emails have (sadly) been pretty effective, and I'm not sure that cover helps...
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 07:35 PM by ihavenobias
At any rate, if you're not sure how to respond to those laughably bad, factually inaccurate anti-Obama smear emails and or you want more information on John McCain, here is a .

11. Clever campaign move
to get attention paid to the cover and "hidden" controversy. The "fear' that dare not speak its name that haunts the campaign.

Good move on their part. (I wonder of they put the New Yorker up to it.)
Get it out there so it can be dealt with and dispatched.

12. I agree with the following comment posted after the article:
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 08:41 PM by Blondiegrrl
"Those who are not funny should not try to be funny."

The New Yorker's cartoons rarely are funny. Whimsical, perhaps, but they suck at satire. That cover image is just one great big bucket of fail.
