I Can't WAIT To See The New Yorker Do An Obama Cover With Him Shucking And Jiving!!!
Because it's just satire dontchaknow?

And then maybe after that they'll do one with Obama with a bone through his nose carrying Michelle over his shoulder riding a zebra! OMG the satirical value of that would be OFF THE CHARTS!!!

And then the coup de grace would be a New Yorker cover of Obama smoking crack with his ho baby mama!

What??? It's just satire. Gosh you all are so oversensitive.

1. So stupid
When you have a magazine that mostly caters to liberals to do something so blatantly offensive. I did see racial overtones in the way they depicted Michelle I don't give a shit if its satire.

2. Hey! I think we are being just like those muslims outraged over Mohammad cartoons!
Remember those cartoons were drawn to make a point against common stereotypes about Islam.

6. Yes, perfect example. Because Mohammed was running for president in a heavily polarized electorate.
With constant attacks on his loyalties coming from the other side.

Why yes, it's EXACTLY the same!

19. Really?, I agree, but where in the cartoon does it point out who is making
those sterotypes? Unless it calls out those that make these idiotic smears it will go over peoples heads. Except for those that know better anyway.

3. GW Bush
has been slammed in many, many political cartoons, and even cover stories (deservedly so) that have mocked his intelligence, his upbringing, his family, his Texan roots, etc, etc, etc....and many, many of us here on the DU have gotten a big kick out of it.

It comes with the territory of running for the highest office in the land. It's probably only going to get worse for Obama with some of the slams by the media.

And yes it is satire (at least that cover story was). You don't have to like it but that's what it is.

I am all for freedom of the press and freedom of speech.

11. I don't know.
You need to ask a Republican.

I am sure some Repukes have found some of the cartoons to be humorous.

I know I have laughed at some cartoons that have mocked Democrats. Sometimes they were funny.

Just as we would probably laugh at a cartoon that mocked a repuke.

7. Well, I find any satire that demeans a person's race or religion to be
offensive. And the cartoon does have deep racial and religious overtones.

Freedom of speech is all about tolerance and yet some use it as a tool to preach intolerance.

Which makes it harder to accept. Democrats are good at shooting their own foot off.

16. They made fun of something that was true.
He is stupid, he does misspeak, he is from Texas, and so on.
So according to your logic, it's true that Barack's a Muslim and Michelle's packin'?

17. Oh stop being so dramatic
no wonder people laugh at liberals. When we act like this, we deserve to be laughed at.

It's not a blasphemy against Obama. It's a satire of the smears against him.

22. I can only imagine the reaction had the New Yorker botched a satrirical...
...cartoon cover of a different candidate—playing upon said candidate's perceived issues while attempting to “explode them”.

A growing wooden nose?

As a bloody-fanged Shakespearean villainess?

Or depicting the Mayella Ewell “accusation/chifferobe” scene from “To Kill A Mockingbird”?

Oh, the laughs would be coming from so many of the same people. :)

27. That's not the argument
the argument isn't "relax - it's just a joke".

The argument is "stop being so fucking dramatic over this nonsensical story because you don't even understand what it's about."

but judging from the positive responses the New Yorker cover has received here, a number of DUers find racism funny, I guess.

Who knew?

23. Judging from the over-the-top negative responses the New Yorker has received here,
a number of DUers would likely try to ban Huckleberry Finn for its overtly racist message, too, I guess.

Who knew?
