Poll question: What is your opinion of the latest New Yorker cover?
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 08:23 PM by Bicoastal
This is sure to be a major point of controversy here over the next couple days...

...but it would be interesting to find the most inflammatory New Yorker cover depicting George and Laura Bush, and compare it to this one...

3. This will shoot holes in the argument that Obama is a latte
drinking liberal elitist. It serves the same purpose as Jackson's "nuts off" comment. Another "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" move on the chessboard for the benefit of low information voters.

5. The cover makes fun of Hannity types who are spewing stupidity.
The campaign should have copies blown up as posters in the office.

The magazine deserves the criticism they're about to get

7. Laughing!!
I'm looking for a high quality image of the cover online that I can print on a good color printer so I can put the cartoon in the window of my car next to the big Obama 08 sign.

I showed it to a Wyoming cowboy who is a dependable red state Republican - he practically swallowed his chaw laughing and allowed that the cartoon pretty much summed up the stupid things people are saying about Barack (he's voting Democratic for the first time in his life in this election).

I thought the people in red states, sorry "Low information voters," were too stupid to get that it was satire. I've heard that only people on DU will "get it."

a satire of a satire, with Cindy McCain as Miss Scott, and yours truly as Bucky riding a rocket headed towards Iran.

On edit: Only that wouldn't be satire, would it?

11. This is blatant racism . .. how could anyone "understand what the artist is doing" . . . PLEASE . .
explain what you mean . . . ????

Meanwhile, where's the cover of Bush/Cheney sitting in the Oval Office with their chemical set

blowing up the Wall Trade Center Towers --- and most of the world????

Maybe there'd also be room to show the 80,000 people we've TORTURED in our prisons ---

and some coffins!!!???!!!

15. The artist was depicting a satirical look at how paranoid ignorant conservatives see the Obamas.
He said so himself, and given that this was the cover of the friggin' NEW YORKER, I tend to believe him.

But your point about the absence of a Bush-themed cover like this is a valid one.

The "satire" has failed because it simply REPEATS the right-wing attacks ...

There's no payback to the GOP here . . .

In fact, it advances their attacks ---

18. I think I understand something basic about this whole thing:
...the New Yorker mag is by-and-large a liberal publication, so they're preaching to the choir when they criticize Bush on the cover. I suppose they thought their most recent cover would be understood as Pro-Obama satire...

...and I think perhaps they need to realize that people outside of Manhattan are going to see this thing and wonder what in blue blazes is going on. Like I've said before, they've finally become too hip for the room--but that's only because the room got bigger.

I'd need a cover with Cheney/Bush blowing up the WTC . . .

I need a cover with Cheney/Bush riding bombs down on Iraq . . .

I need a cover showing Cheney/Bush reducing Iraq to rubble --- and

the innocent children and families they're murdering ---

I need a cover with COFFINS, COFFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS . . .

COFFINS, COFFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS . . .

COFFINS, COFFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS . . .

COFFINS, COFFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS, COFFINS . . .

14. I just wish I could find a copy of the cover the New Yorker ran just
before the 2004 election. It featured Kerry in a formal navy uniform looking over at a drunken Bush wearing a leather bomber jacket. We thought it was hilarious and captured the essence of the reason that Kerry was going to win in a land slide!

19. Sadly, the old adage applies:
"Nobody ever went broke overestimating the stupidity of the American people."

There will be thousands of ingorant people that will see this cover in an email or some other context that is not seeing the New Yorker and reading the article, and will use this as "proof" that Obama is a sleeper cell terrorist or muslim or wild, evil, untrustworthy person. These people will vote for McCain as a way to vote against Obama.

Remember, there was a study in the 90s of people who got their news from different sources and their knowledge of world events and politics. The people who got their news from talk radio, conservative newsletters and wingnut magazines were the LEAST INFORMED out of 5 or 6 other groups (newspapers, TV news, liberal publications, nonpartisan mags, etc.). But they were also the MOST CERTAIN that they were correct. As Al Franken said, researchers called this phenomenon Pseudo-certainty, but we call it "being a fucking moron."

These people will see this cover as proof of something the Republican Noise Machine puts out there. This can only hurt, but hopefully it will be negligible.

27. snicker commercial?
far from the same... Involved actors we didn't know, who weren't running for office, and it involved a same sex kiss. Sure, there was people ticked off about it, but this is not a game - the presidency is going to change a lot of things one way for the better or the worse depending on who we get

this is the point exactly that the people who aren't in disgust over this need to see - over half of DUer's in a poll are either angry or upset about the racist tinged cover. It's like something Mad TV would do to point out bigot's behavior - it's not something you'd expect to see on the cover of a political magazine.

Really ill conceived, and since the Obama campaign is upset over it, I think it will be pulled, along with all the emails many people have written in the past few hours. I'm glad many see it for what it is, an affront to the positive campaign message Obama's running, he's shying away from discussing these stupid email campaigns - the NY should have had the sense to do so, too!

26. Option 2 -given how politically illiterate this country is this isn't ideal
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 09:36 PM by nam78_two
But perhaps given how politically illiterate this country is, most people are not even aware of what the New Yorker is. If it doesn't hurt his poll no.s then I don't really care. Still don't see that it is all that funny/clever or anything of the sort. Pretty obvious satire-there are cleverer things on TDS or the Colbert Report everyday. Heavy-handed and obvious satire is rarely as funny or effective (imo at least) as more subtle stuff.

Had they put him in a monkey suit and called it a satire of racists.

It'll be fodder for the anti Obama folks and candy for cable but overall a short distraction.

Personally I think the artist could have made his point better but... stay classy New Yorker.
