And it has to do with our individual rights of free expression that cannot be squelched by the government through litigious means.

This is about journalistic fairness on issues of controversial import, which the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 made obsolete. Nevertheless there is no need for outrage here, as you've pointed out.

Those that read the New Yorker are likely to see that as an edgy satire of the MSM's continued predilections for fabricated news and sound-bite nonsense. How many idiotic meme fabrications can you find in the cover? Kind of reminds you of Fr. Guido Sarducci's Find the Popes in the Pizza contest.
