I am genuinely curious.

I am not worked up about it one way or another, but I think the reason it fails at satire is that it doesn't go far enough. I hear about Obama the America hater, Obama the Muslim, Obama the terrorist, etc from the media ALL THE TIME.

1. That's the very point of the cartoon, eh.
FauxNews and their fellow haters do it already, daily. See how silly they are.

4. If the cartoon wanted to REALLY make that point, it would have shown that depiction of the Obamas as
a thought bubble coming from Fox news. Yes, I know that's artistically lame, but the cartoon as it is totally fails as satire, because there's no actual indication of the true target of the satire.

3. Since the point of the cover is to attack the likes of Bill Kristol,

I don't think Bill Kristol would likely be a part of such a venture.

By the way, is the cover actually tied to the article in any way? Or do they just happen to be in the same issue?

5. Monkey - And how many Americans are smart enough to figure out
the satire? That is where I think this whole thing has backfired!

9. The New Yorker's audience, by and large, ARE smart enough

Those that aren't the New Yorker's audience are not the New Yorker's concern.

7. From Jack & Jill Politics - for those who don't know it, this is how they
describe themselves - "A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics"

For the record - I'm white and hate the cover. I know it is supposed to be satire but I think they failed miserably.

With Friends Like These……

Obama doesn’t need any enemies.

Sigh
Sigh
Sigh

Thanks to rdxtion in the Sunday Open Thread who dropped this hat tip.

It’s unreal to me that nearly all the BS coming against Obama during this campaign season….HAS COME FROM SO-CALLED FRIENDLY SOURCES.

This isn’t the NATIONAL REVIEW.

This is THE NEW YORKER.

What bothers me?

I dunno. Take your pic.

Bin Laden above the fireplace
The American Flag in the fireplace.
Obama in ‘Muslim’ Garb.
Michelle - with an Angela Davis Afro, and a Black Panther Machine gun.

Good lord, how many goddamn Obama smears can be placed in one picture frame?

I can hear the clicks now(copying and pasting of the picture), being sent in emails, all across the country.

UPDATE: I’m going to co-sign with these two comments on this pic…

Texas_Girl_In_LA
I’m trying really hard to find the humor folks…but as a person of color..this shit ain’t funny.

carolinagirl:
…………..but the artist is emphasizing all the stereotypical physical traits of black women as well. I’m not sure how to take it. Well…. okay it’s bullshi……..

AMEN to the both of you.

UPDATE TWO:

This is a reply I made on another blog when someone commented that it was ’satire’:

I’m going to be brutal right now.

THEY AIN’T WHITE.

THEY AIN’T WHITE.

You CANNOT pull this satire-oh-so-smart cover bullshit with BLACK PEOPLE.

What the fuck is wrong with The New Yorker.

This is INSANE.

I don’t know what country they live in, but I live in A-merry-ca.

And this racist drivel isn’t funny.

The email address for The New Yorker.

11. And I agree with them.
Sad thing is, this out-of-touch-with-reality "artist" probably thinks he created a masterpiece with this lame ass depiction. Sometimes people who think they are really smart are some of the most tone deaf and socially awkward folks in the world.

First of all, the illustration is uncreative. What, in that picture, was imaginative in anyway? It is just a literal illustration of the smears. I wonder if he laughed while drawing it?

I mean, some wingnuts have rumored that Obama smoked crack with some white dude. Would it have been appropriate to literally have Obama smoking crack out of a crack pipe on the cover? As long as someone called it satire, then I guess it would be okay with them.
