DUers need to organize a national "New Yorker" magazine burning! We can have a giant
bonfire and register our shock, outrage, and disgust over a cartoon by burning all available copyies of the New Yorker Magazine.

It will draw the media and the whole country can see we are serious about our candidates good taste!

Whatta you say boys? Whose with me!!!!!!!

6. Most people don't have copies. But many can contribute the works of E.B. White to the flames --
Many homes have a Stewart Little or Charlotte's Web lying around (if only in DVD form.) Any copies of the Elements of Style would also be welcomed. Or if anyone has any old books of Thurber cartoons, that would also work.

We need a "message" with this as well. We need to push for an adjustment to the First Amendment: not really a roll-back of the freedom of the press, but we DO need an explicit constitutional requirement that when organs of the press come out with tongue-in-cheek "satire" stuff like this, they MUST affix a dripping-sarcasm smilie to the image presented.

8. Yes. and DU can copywrite and liicense that dripping sarcasm thingy. And the profits used to
buy the New Yorker and change the name to My Obama New Yorker!

Then we can run lots of pictures of the family, stories of when people first registered to vote back in the South side of Chicago voter registration drive, and a 5 page article called, "FISA saved my family's life twice in a month."

Keep the ideas coming people!!!!

9. Why can't we say they laid a big turd?
Because they did.

I don't want to burn, shut down, or otherwise censor any media outlet, and that includes Fox News, The National Review, or my otherwise beloved New Yorker.

Your attempt at satire seems to be trying to shut down honest discussion of a really failed, and potentially harmful, journalistic effort. Are you for shutting down discussion?

19. The absolute WORST thing we can do.... we'll look like Nazi book burners....

The New Yorker cover is FREE SPEECH.

Offensive speech MUST BE PROTECTED.... even if it offends you deeply.

That's the point of the 1st amendment.

What you are calling for is the height of anti-American.

Not understanding the importance of the two way street that is the first amendment. Right to say whatever you want and the right for others to call you a schmuck for saying it.

30. Just because you call it satire
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 09:03 AM by Jake3463
doesn't mean its actually funny or has any value.

I don't agree with any law breaking but some people think that the New Yorker should get some sort of pass for free speech sake. If they offend people than the people have the right to let them know through legal means.

Free speech goes both ways.

34. Just because you don't like it
doesn't mean it isn't good satire.

And are you going to address the point that people ARE calling for removal (by the NYer itself or by theft and other means) since that is the point of the OP or are you going to continue to build strawmen and say the OP doesn't deal with those hay-like arguments?

36. Seems like I'm not alone in my opinion
Perhaps I should be very crystal clear with you.

I find it offensive as do many others for many reasons. You know what would be a funny cover Obama as a monkey or chasing a lion with a spear....its just satire you know. :sarcasm:

If market pressures (angry readership) dictate the New Yorker should remove the cover than by all means I support that. I do not support illegal means for its removal. They have a right to publish it. People have the right to cancel their subscriptions.

Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 09:18 AM by Goblinmonger
Obama as a monkey or chasing a lion with a spear because that's not what the media is saying about him. They are saying what the picture shows to an absurd level and that is why the REAL picture is satire and your HYPOTHETICAL one isn't and probably why you aren't a satirical cartoonist.

38. I don't have to have it explained to me
I still find it to be racist and offensive and I don't like it. Therefore the New Yorker is off my reading list and I have let them know this.

That's my excercise of free speech to theirs.

22. I find odd
that criticism of free speech these days (not the right to free speech but to other things people say) is suddenly an issue with people on here. The first amendment only works when I have the right to say something and you have the right to call me out and say how stupid what I just said was.

Saying I think that cover was offensive and had racist overtones doesn't mean I want to have a book burning. Its an opinion. I'll support the right of the New Yorker to publish that cover with my dying breath however doesn't mean I have to like what they are publishing or not say hey I think that cover is a offensive with racist overtones and I'm not buying your damn magazine.

31. Yes, and I have the right to my opinion of your opion! I love free speech!
By the way, I'm hoping people don't buy the magazine.

I intend to get a few copies and then after Obama is president I will sell them on E-bay. The fewer copies around the more valuable they will be!

The magazine burning idea is a joke. It's satire on the reaction of some to the satire cover of the New Yorker.

And you of course have a right to dislike my post as well. Go for it!

41. The Nazis burned books and magazines
If we can't counter The New Yorker on the battlefield of ideas, then are our ideas worth defending? Burning amounts to defeat. I refuse to succumb to the same impulse as the Puritans, Nazis, or the brain-dead minions who burned Dixie Chicks CD's.
